Maryland ride, Saturday September 1st, 2012

Hey y'all...

Definitely doing a full day of riding this weekend, just a matter of where and with who. Thought I'd post it here and get a feel to see if anyone is interested and what not.. Not that it means much, but the ten day weather outlook is looking good. I have a few ideas of destinations in mind, some long (a good 8 hour day?) and some not so long... just depends on the starting point.

And just an FYI, I'm open for ideas/suggestions...

Steve

Start Point

Hi Steve - I'm in north Arlington. Could we start near the PG side of the Beltway bridge, across the Potomac from Alexandria? That doesn't seem far for you, but gets the start at an accessible point. I've never been to that part of MD, but it's close to some places I get around regularly.
Cheers,
Bill

Hey Bill,

Thst sounds like a good idea, but lets see who all is down for saturday when the date gets closer I guess...

my main question is how long of a ride do people want to go on? A couple hours or all day? Because that will decide a lot right there..

End place

Steve - a lot depends on where we end up. If we start near 495, just over the river, we can do a loop south and then come back north? At the end of the ride I have to get back across the river and get back to north Arlington. If we end up in Greenbelt, I've got a ways to go home.
What about a trip to Solomon's Island or something like that. Then we could loop back after that.
Just a thought.

Steve - I'll do the run with Scorch. We've been out there before. Sorry, to switch you. Why don't we do Solomons Island when the mob won't be out on holiday?! I forgot about that. I know for you it's a haul to PORocks. Do you think you could get there? If not I'll see you soon for a run down the peninsula.

Scorch - I'll see you and who ever else gets there, PORocks at 10 am this Saturday. You'll get to see my latest 250, the 1989 Honda VTR 250.

Cheers,
Bill

Steve - you want to ride Saturday and Scorch is up for Monday. I'll see you Saturday then. Pick a place close to 495, Alexandria, just on your side of MD and I'll see you there. Let's consider not sitting in beach traffic.

Cheers,
Bill

Bill, I know all back roads to solomons, a nice scenic ride. Or we could ride to point lookout, another good one. Traffic won't be bad at all I bet

Cool. This works. It's nice to be able to cash in on a good ride with someone else's experience. I like being able to emulate my 'back home' of riding along various places along the Pacific coast. This way I get a good day's ride and another known good place to ride.

Anyone else here able to get to the Alexandria/Nat Harbor part of 495?

Bill

Yea bill...

once you come over the bridge, your first exit after the national harbor will be for 210... Like just stay on210 south for a mile if that, and there is a shell station there., probably around 10am or so?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. My husband and I rode from Elkridge to Emmitsburg (127 miles round trip) on this day. We rode to get crabs for his birthday. Got caught in the rain on the way home, on Rt 32 getting onto Rt 70. Thankfully the storm was moving so we only got dumped on a little bit. But enough to get soaked all the way through with all my gear on...was like a monsoon!

Did you all end up getting together?

Yup, ended up taking a lil tour through the backroads of Southern Maryland... probably about 80 miles or so.

We really need to plan a big ride soon, with like a bunch of people!

Thank you, I will let him know you said that

I think my neighbor has an 1198? He keeps asking to ride with us, but we haven't ridden with him yet.

We went to Rube's Crab Shack (www.rubescrabshack.com) in Emmitsburg. It was pretty good, I guess. I don't pick crabs but everyone else that did enjoyed them. Our family are big into eating crabs, so if they were even the slightest off they would have spoken up about it.
