jetting question
Hi Iam trying to use my questions wisely as not to become a pest.
I installed a uni air filter now at full throttle the bike bogs and surges, I have some 114 DJ Main jets left over from my old ninja 500. But I was wondering if I just started by shimming the needles would I be correct? The bike ran fine prior to the air filter change, so I think there is a air fuel conundrum. I was hoping to hear from others that might have shimmed the bike. Theses little bikes seem touchy, so I want to work on it in small increments. Thanks mike h |

Ok thanks no jet kit, I do have 114 Mains left sitting around, I will give it a try with & with out the snorkle & added shims,
I have the bike stripped down with everything off, except the carbs, the stock air box looks like there is little room to pull the carbs out. I saw the demo with the pods & carb removal hopefully it is the same. Thank you. |

A replacement filter shouldn't make a huge change in mixture that would make it run terrible.
I think there may be a couple of things going on. Cold temps. Cold air will make you run lean. If you are on the border of being lean in warm weather you'll be lean when it cools off. Summer gas. Summer gas won't vaporize properly in cold weather. Old gas or condensation. If the tank have been low for a while you can get condensation that will make it run poorly. You can add the shims, but it's not going to get you good WOT running. Shimming the needles richens the mixture from off idle up to where the needle is out of the jet - then it's all controlled by the main. A 114 main would be way too much with just the mods you have. |

ok thanks jk
I will proceed with much caution and the skill of a drunken sailor, I think you're right there are couple things going on like that for sure. Thank you. Small changes, snorkel no snorkel old filter new filter two shims no shims, and a couple of strip carburetor bolts ha ha.
