I think ya can rig one up for much cheaper, those rc helicopters at Frye's are about $40, duct tape a go pro and you're money. . . well, not as fancy, can't control zoom or anything, but would be fun to try, until someone crashes one on the track, and causes a serious get-off. Haveta try the aerial cam in the bedroom first, I guess. . .

You guys realize that Chris already has one and was trying to fly it a couple rounds ago.

That footage is from a big expensive one, carrying a DSLR. Chris' will just be GoPro footage. Still awesome to hover right over the start and have everyone go underneath like a motogp helo.

GPS stabilization? GPS isn't good enough to stabilize ****.

I do believe his (and all?) quadrotors have some form of GPS/INS system so they can hover in place by themselves.

INS systems are made of a 3 axis accel and 3 axis gyro coupled so you can sense movement down to inches or sub inches. But they are bad at sensing if they are very slowly drifting out of place, so you need the GPS to occasionally tell them where they are to ~5ft precision to "re-zero".

The problem with using the GoPro is it'll make use look like ants crawling through the track.

My rebuttal:
I am quite familiar with the gyros and accelerometers located inside of most quadrohelicopters. In fact, I calibrate those accelerometers so I know the abysmal echelon of their type. You said

which is exactly what I was saying... so STAY OFF THE FORUMS WHEN DRUNK, DRUNKIE!

...but serisouly... you need somebody who knows how to fly these things (which aint easy), you also want to have a good helli that'll handle the swinds out there.

I have a friend with such skills and such helicopter.. .buuuuuuuuut, trying to get him out to chuckwalla is proving to be a.... challenge....

Cheaper version would be to get the Parrot AR Drone 2.0.
