Canceling insurance

When it gets too cold for you to ride, and you garage your bike do you cancel your insurance until you're ready to ride again? Obviously this is only for those that have a 'riding season', but I'm curious if there is any penalty for not paying for the month or two that you're not riding.

I don't cancel it completely, it's just reduced to fire & theft. $5 a month for storage protection basically.

To do that do you basically just call the company and say you don't plan on going anywhere on it? $5 is awesome theft coverage.

Yea, just call em. They should be used to the seasonal reductions in coverage.

I ride year-round in OK, so I carry insurance 24/7.

FWIW, my '05 250 is only $33.54/year for 250/500/250 liability and $250/deductible comprehensive. My '07 650R is a bit higher at $199.92/year for 250/500/250 liability, $250/deductible comprehensive & $250/deductible collision.

I have uninsured stacked on a cage, so it covers my cycles no-charge.

I strip the coverage down to what is required to keep the insurance active so I dont have to turn in my plate.

I asked my insurance company about something like this. I asked if I could only insure it for fire and theft for the winter months, and they told me they didn't offer that option. They said their rates essentially reflected the assumption of not being able to use the vehicle for that time of the year.

Or you could be an impatient idiot like me and take insurance out when it could snow any minute

I asked my agent the exact same thing and got the exact same answer that you did.

hmmm.... maybe it has something to do with your state?!?! Never heard that before though and Ive been in the insurance industry for over 10 years. I do deal with commercial only but can’t imagine it’s too much different. But like I said, might be your state regulations. No need to have full coverage on something that’s not on a public road. No need to have collision. If anything, you can keep the comprehensive in case something happens while in storage.

Yeah, I know insurance laws vary by state. And I have basic coverage. But I asked them that question because here, you have to turn your plate in to DMV once you drop coverage. So I avoid having to do that and getting a different plate number every year.

If you cancel coverage completely you have to turn your plate in here too.. Thats why I keep minimal on just to avoid that exact thing.

Don't forget that if you cancel your coverage completey, that gap in time between when you get coverage again can screw you. I had a month or two gap in coverage when I was younger(sold car and bought new one) and Alstate told me that since it wasn't continuous, they counted me as just starting to drive at the new start date. Needless to say my rates went WAY up for 6 months.
