30 years of Team Italia Velocità
Copied from
http://www.teamitaliafmi.com/en/storia/ http://www.teamitaliafmi.com/en/albo-doro/ In 1979 Italy had already successful riders ready to fight for the World Championship but there was the need of working on young riders, in order to help them emerge in the International motorcycling scenery. That’s how Team Azzurro born. The riders put a sticker on the fairing to thank the Federation for the support. The 1981 is the year of the first titles in European Championship and in 1982 the Team gets a bigger subsidy from the federal management and it starts to become a proper team. The leather suits are the first thing to have been done and after the mechanic’s clothing, the sponsors and the press relation. After the first World titles, in 1985 the Team Italia Velocità is officially born. As a consequence of the victories in the 80’s (thanks to Gresini, Chili, Cadalora etc..), the task of creating a new generation of riders in the World Grand Prix is finished and FMI decides to interrupt the successful adventure of Team Italia, but they still are present in the European Championship. From the end of the 80’s and during the 90’s a series of success highlights the Italian motorcycling school, thanks to Team Italia and several young riders in the World Championship such as Gramigni, Biaggi, Cecchinello, Perugini, Locatelli, Battaini, Borsoi e Rolfo. There was a long collaboration with Aprilia during the 2000’s, when Team Italia connects its name with Team Lorenzini by Leoni: this was the beginning of new adventures in Supersport and Superstock with Iannuzzo, Brignola and later Cruciani, Corradi, Fabrizio, Alfonsi, Vizziello. Not to forget also the important results of Corti and Pirro, the success of Fenati (1st in 125 cc European Championship, with Antonelli 3rd), the good placing of Petrucci (Superstock 1000), Russo (Superstock 600) and the start of the new adventure in World Championship with Morciano and Tonucci. In 2012 Team Italia is at the top of the international motorcycling. Romano Fenati, at his debut in Moto3 World Championship (the new class which replaces 125cc), finishes the season as 6th overall: he achieves a victory, two second places and a third place, while Alessandro Tonucci gets 45 points and a podium. Team Italia gets also two second places, thanks to Eddi La Marra (Superstock 1000 FIM Cup) and to Riccardo Russo (European Superstock 600), who wins the Italian title too. The 2013 season is the start of the successful partnership between San Carlo and Team Italia: in European Superstock 600 Franco Morbidelli and Alessandro Nocco finish the season respectively 1st and 2nd overall, bringing back Team Italia on the top of this continental class for young talents under 22 years old. Important confirmations also in Moto3 World Championship: Romano Fenati proved himself again to be the best Italian rider (10th), while Francesco Bagnaia made his debut in the World Championship. After these victories, 2014 gives new satisfaction to San Carlo Team Italia. In European Superstock 600 the rookie Marco Faccani becomes European Champion, winning 5 rounds out of 7, while his teammate Andrea Tucci, who makes his debut in 2014 too, finishes 3rd overall. Always following its philosophy ,whose slogan is “Since 1985 we form young champions“, in the World Championship, Team Italia counts on the 2012 Moto3 European Champion Matteo Ferrari and the Moto3 Italian champion Andrea Locatelli, authors of an increasing season on their Mahindra MGP3O Moto3. In its 30 years of activity, Team Italia of the Italian Motorcycling Federation stands out in the principal national and international championships for being one of the team with the greatest history, tradition and results in the Italian motorcycling. In World Championship, Team Italia counts three titles in 125cc (Fausto Gresini in 1985 and 1987, Luca Cadalora in 1986), while the European titles are 18, the last one with Marco Faccani in Superstock 600. The titles in the principal national championships are 16, besides one title in Coppa Italia in Sport Production 125 2 stroke in 2011 with Michael Ruben Rinaldi, current rider of San Carlo Team Italia in European Superstock 600.
