Why NO reserve tank??? DIY anyone?
So guys...Im sure its happened to a few of us, as well as me...Its happened 2 or 3 times to me. I DONE RUNNED OUTA GASOLINEEE! The one thing i think i HATE on these bikes is that there isnt a RESERVE tank!!!
So, has anyone done a DIY on making their own reserve bottle/tank in the fairings somewhere that you could switch to when you run out? I would absolutly LOVE to figure out a way to make one... Thanks |

DIY for keeping gas in the bike (may require prior knowledge of your bike's mileage. Not for n3wbi3s, or those who lack in the algebra department)
1) fill up tank 2) reset trip odometer 3) multiply your average mileage by the volume of the tank. Subtract 15 miles just to be safe 5) never go more miles than this on a tank. 5) repeat steps 1-4 indefinitely. When all else fails, just fill up when the gauge says you need gas |

Because you have a gas gauge! Duh. When the little needle goes down towards the little red E. You need to fill the tank. No need for a reserve. You gave up a temp gauge and that reserve tank when you decided that the pregen was just to ugly to buy. So sucks to be you! Haha.
DIY: Buy one of these... Just bungee it to the rear seat and you've now got a reserve! |

I'd gladly trade an inaccurate fuel gauge for a reserve switch. Maybe a very small container of gas under the passenger seat?

Reserves on bikes are not an extra fuel cell hidden somewhere. They involve the petcock having a tube that the "On" position pulls from and then when switched to "Reserve" it is able to completely empty the tank. This makes the effective capacity of the tank slightly smaller than what it actually holds.
You may be able to find a different petcock (pre-gen maybe?) that you could try using. |

The fuel gauge on our bikes may not be the most accurate in the world, but it does give you at least some idea of how much gas you have left. I can understand if you run out once. But just make sure you fill up before the gauge gets that low again.

If only there was a way to measure the distance I can usually go before refilling the tank. I could press a button and the measurement would reset so I'd always know for sure.
Man if I could invent something like that I would be a millionaire. Bah it'd never take off anyway. |

So does your car have a reserve tank? Or do you, you know, watch the fuel gauge and get gas when it's nearing empty? Just wondering...

My gas gauge sucks balls, I'll be near empty and I still have only used 3.3 gallons left. It's so deceiving.

DIY:
Step 1: Look at this instrument gauge when you are riding . . . When that little needle on the right gets down where it is there near the E, get gas. Step 2: If that didn't work, get these . . .

hell, my car didn't even have a working gas gauge. I bought gas based on the mileage. I got on the ninja, and it was the same thing! no problemo!

I don't even have a fuel gauge on my ninja and I'm not even complaining!
When the light comes up I just get gas from the nearest station. Oh and you can keep track of your odometer to estimate.. i.e. I know i'll be needing gas soon after 300km. |

Then again, I never really get down below a 1/4 tank anyways in the suv so it's moot point, being a 95 liter tank, it get's really expensive having to fill that puppy up all in one shot..... |

I fill my tank everytime I check my air, I don't have a guage. I guess having a .8 gallon reserve is better? Create a good routine and take care of your ride and self. Running out of gas is ass. It's also good to run your tank out as far as you can every month or two to keep the fuel clean as possible, easy with a reserve. Didn't know the improved version had no reserve, first for me.

If you really want a reserve, you could replace the petcock with a pregen. I know the bolt pattern is the same, but the seal is a little different.
You will loose the "prime" function. Personally, I just look at the odometer. I generally switch to reserve at 150 and get gas before it goes over 180. |

I never switch to reserve unless the bike starts sputtering and dying randomly because I've pushed it to the point of being super low on gas. That doesn't usually happen until like 240 or so miles. (now it will be more like 220 miles because I redid my intake and jetting) Then I have .75 gallons roughly left which is more than enough to get to a station and fill up |

but that will make you run out of gas! the reserve is in case you empty the main tank! you just reach down and switch from "on" to "res" when it starts sputtering and not responding to throttle. Then it perks right back up again and you can go get gas within 40 miles
don't leave it on reserve, cuz on reserve, once you're out, you're out |

oh really? huh. I always let mine go down to reserve unless I know I'm going any distance because that way, I can burn through the crud and water potentially at the bottom of the tank. Better to burn it off a little at a time than to completely get stranded because your bike doesn't like running on only water at the bottom of the tank.
I guess you riding around on reserve all the time also does that... |

the fuel guage isn't inaccurate. You just gotta know how to use it...
Its 18L(Americans do your coversions), when it hits Empty you still have 6L, a third of the tank....on EMPTY!!! and you're complaining about not having reserve? That's more than enough to get you to your next fill up. |
