Plug, patch or replace?

I picked up a screw in my new front tire (700kms on it) and am getting conflicting info on whether or not to have it repaired or replaced.. I've also been searching different forums n sites trying to find actual facts on blow outs due to plugging the tire and I have not found any facts only "coulds"..

What are your opinions and has anyone here experienced anything negative with a plugged tire on your bike or car?

I'd say you would be okay to have it plugged. Make sure whoever you have do it does quality work. The plug is only as good as the guy that does the work.

btw, what kinda tire are you trying to save?

I personally prefer a patch instead of a plug. I have been running with a patched rear tire for approximately 500 miles with no problems.

Have it patched. Having a plug put in does further damage to the tire if your hole is small. The hole must be enlarged to make room for the plug which holds a chance of starting some belt separation.

If out on the road sure I would plug a tire, but if I have a choice and can have it patched, then a patch is the way to go. On motorcycles, I consider a plug to be a temporary fix to get me home and then get a new tire asap. I consider a patch to be a permanent fix and use the tire until it needs replaced due to wear.

Well Ill take your good tires.

A plug will not hurt your tire but if you can have it patched cheap enough do it. but if not a plug works fine.

Putting a plug in a tire almost always does more damage to the tire. If the puncture/hole is smaller than the reamer, you're doing more damage to the tire.

That being said... the sales guy that sells us our tire repair equipment and supplies drives around in a ford explorer. He has four different brands of tires on this thing, each with about 50 plugs... about 20 of em are right in the middles of the the sidewalls.

It does not cause more damage. I know you don't know but my family sells and repairs tires and when plugged by some one who knows what there doing it will be fine.

Don't you usually have to increase the size of the hole in order to install a plug? If you do, then it doesn't matter what skills you have or what you think you might know, you're making the hole bigger. This is more damage. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express a couple weeks ago.

Sometimes the hole does need to be enlarged but for the most part you just cleaning up the whole so the plug sticks good.

I guess a plug/patched tire would be ok for inner city commuting....but if you spend much of your time at 70mph or more on the interstate. Heck no.

Speed.

Its why tires are rated by speed they are going to be used at. There are no speed rated plugs/patches.

You know nothing about plugs or patches. My dyna has a plug and I run it way above 80 and rode it from mi to tn with two plugs in it

I've had a plug in my rear tire for about 4000 miles now. Keep an eye on tire pressure the first couple of days. The bump of the plug will eventually wear down and vulcanize and you'll have to really look for it to find it after awhile, so no worries.

I now keep a set of plugs and a small 12v air compressor under my rear seat.

Any notable difference between a standard tar plug and a mushroom-type plug? I was told a while back that the tar's only barely worth using on a moto tire, so I bought one of the Stop-n-Go kits, but have not needed it in the last 15,000mi.

+1 I have a patch on my rear tire (500+ miles) and constantly do 75 to 80 on the highway for 1/2 hr or more at a time with no problems. Balancing the tire after the repair is a very important key.
