(Replying to my own post) I知 not sure where to post questions, but I知 replacing my cylinder cover gasket, and I壇 like to know if the gasket is supposed to be flat on the top? It just looks odd considering the cover is grooved. I値l be using silicone where it goes per the manual, but should I put silicone on the top of the gasket too?

Hi Tommy! Welcome to Ninjette !!!

Yes, flat where it meets cylinder-head. Grooved on cover side.

Don't use silicone, it doesn't stick very well when there's oil around. Also on newer bikes with EFI, it tends to sneak through to exhaust and foul up O2-sensors. Use FIPG material such as Toyota 00295-00103, Yamabond-4 (not 5), Permatex The Right Stuff Grey.

Apply where manual instructs. If you want, apply just tiny bit on flat side, a fishing-line sized bead. Top side not needed due to groove and labyrinth sealing. Also don't over-tighten valve-cover bolts. They bottom and stops pressing on gasket after certain point. More torque will just snap valve-cover bolts.

Interesting, the gasket I have is flat on top where it meets the cover, which is grooved, and is grooved on the bottom where it meets the head, which is flat. I know it痴 oriented right because the half moons are down. The old gasket seems to be shallowly grooved on both sides. Willy the new gasket create it痴 own grooves when torqued?

Every gasket that I see online is flat on top, grooved on the bottom, so I have to assume it is correct and I’m installing it
