Wider rear tire for a 2003 Ninja

I am a total noob, and when I say noob, I mean this is my very first bike I ever owned and this spring will be my very first riding season ever! I just bought a blue 2003 ninja 250 with 14,000 miles on it for $1500 and it's sitting in the garage over the winter.

I would love to put a wider tire on the back of it because I think it would look cool, but I am confused about tire sizes. I am having trouble finding matching tires online and I keep seeing "scooter" tires!

Can someone school me on where to shop online and also what size to look for as far as a wider rear tire?

Wider tires - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/About_wider_tires

This may answer some questions - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Tires

More info you may find useful - https://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Ninja250_Howto

Generally, larger tires adversely affect handling and should be avoided.

You have 16" wheels, which are not very common at this point, so you don't have all the options that the newer 250 has with 17" wheels.

We had Pirelli Diablo Scooter tires on one of our Ninjas and Pirelli MT75s on another, and my son liked the less expensive Scooters better. I have found that Pirelli tires (even their car tires) dry out and crack long before they should, so I no longer will buy them.

Welcome!

Your options for a wider tire on a pregen are limited at best without heavy modifications to the bike. As this is your first bike, you might want to stick with more common options so your intro into riding is more predictable and if any questions arise, they can be answered without tire/bike setup "what ifs.."

Good luck and enjoy being a new rider, it's one of the best times in riding.

Easiest way for wider rear tyre is to install swingarm, shock and rear-wheel from new-gen 2008-2012 model. Takes about 1.5-2.0 hrs max to install and prices have dropped lots in past couple years.

You'll get much better spring-rate and damping control of rear-wheel. Rear 17" wheel will open up huge options in tyre models and size selections. A 150/60-17 is max that'll fit, more will rub swing-arm and chain. Still hefty size up from pre-gen rear tyre.
