KLR 650
In my search for a bike to satisfy my desire to travel long distances as well as explore the beautiful wilderness in which I'm surrounded, I came across a well maintained 2001 KLR 650.
I'm currently scrounging up some dirt oriented gear, and looking forward to some serious exploring. Here she is posing beside her younger prettier sister. |

Right on. I do like the looks of the older KLRs vs the new ones. Something seems more practical with them.

I had a friend ask me the other day why I bought the KLR when I had a perfectly good ZX6R.
My analogy was "The ZX is like a sports car, and the KLR is a work truck. When you want to go for a spirited ride on the road, you take the sports car. When you want to go through the bush to get to your favourite secret fishing spot, you take the work truck" |

It's an absolute blast on fire roads and gravel trails, all the way to an ATV trail. But anything more narrow or rocky and this beast is just too darn heavy. I think if the intention was to do 80% dirt and 20% road, then you would want something a little smaller like a klx250, but for a 50/50 split, it's currently the right tool for the job. It's also incredibly easy to maintain. Because of the height and lack of fairings, any major components can be access within 5 minutes. Oil changes, Air filter changes and even valve adjustment aren't very intimidating! (And much easier since it only has one cylinder) Hope this helps! |

I've had mine for 7 years, it's a great bike! I've been in many places that it shouldn't be and it does great.
Go up to James bay, it's awesome. http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/...?topic=42139.0

It was only 8 days, I had just lost my job though, so it worked out very well!

You've got the sport bike and the pickup truck.. Which bike will be the "commuter car"?
I like the KLR. Nearly bought one for my first bike before I saw the massive curb weight..
