Can I fix this chain?

This chain has 12,000 miles on it. Two days ago, it broke. Can I fix it or should I buy a new one?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and reply! Here are the pics of the chain:

Just buy a new one. It already has 12k miles on it. An O-Ring chain is what? $60? and it takes less than an hour. Well, maybe depending on if you know what you're doing.

It takes 20min if its your first time changing it out I'd say 45 min get the tool to do it right.

If I buy the new chain and sprockets, can I change it myself? I don't have a stand or anything fancy, but I do have some tools.

But other then a few simple tools you can do it. Don't forget a ruler to set the slack and tape to measure from the swing ARM bolts to the axle nut to make sure the tire is straight.

No, do not repair.

Replace chain and sprockets.

http://vehicle-maintenance.wonderhow...rcycle-388666/

With these

http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/...d-X-Ring-Chain

http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/...Front-Sprocket

http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/...Steel-Sprocket

The primary drive chains have been treating me very well on my KLR, which is very rough on chains, I'm getting 10,000 miles with very little maintenance.

Welcome to our site, Ralph !!!

That chain looks as having little wear, so the sprockets may be in pretty good shape still.

My question should be your question: what made that strong chain brake in such a nasty way.

The answer may save the next new chain from similar fate.

Well, Moto and others, I may have not been checking the chain's tension properly. I'm thinking that's what caused the breakage.

I did buy the X-ring chain with the steel sprockets. I got the sprockets on but the brake pad fell out so I have been taking a while to figure out how to put it back in. I got it back in now.

Anyway, I'm going to eat something and try to put the rear tire back on next. I'm using the guide found at faq.ninja250.org to help.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the helpful posts!

Also, Verboten, that was a VERY helpful video. Sometimes it's nice to see something done rather than just reading the instructions.

Okay, I can't believe I'm saying this, but this is really difficult and I'm deeply considering giving up and just bringing it to the shop. They want $120 to put the new chain on for me.

I can't keep the brake pad from falling out (and it's almost worn completely out anyway), and I can't seem to line up the brake caliper with the wheel to get the bolt through.

The whole thing just looks so easy in that video!

Did you try releasing the chain tensioners all the way?

Just take a break until tomorrow.

Ralphy, I've been waiting for you to post about that chain. A bad chain can lead to a chain of bad events. When you ride a motorcycle there are certain things that can really ruin your day. The worst besides crashing and dying, second is being stranded. Most motorcycles are chain driven so if your chain goes by the wayside (breaks) you will not be able to continue on your way, thus being stranded. Believe it or not most riders don't carry an extra chain so you should always make sure the one running between your engine/transmission and your rear tire is in proper working condition.

Don't ride around on a motorcycle that is about to break. Your safety, and enjoyment is of the utmost importance.

I too am pretty curious how the chain broke in that nasty way. I'm sure you were riding when it happened, how fast were you going? I feel like if you haven't been checking the tension that would mean it's become loose and would pop off the sprockets before snaping like that. Unless it jumped off and caught on something, then broke. Still, those chains are pretty strong and yours doesn't look worn out or rusted. I agree with moto...I'd figure out what caused that, because that's not supposed to happen.

anyway, how's it coming along? If you're still having trouble PM me with your questions and i'll take some pics of my bike or a video to show you what steps you need to do to get it complete...better yet post some good pics here and plenty of people will be able to help you. I replaced my chain and sprockets a few months ago. Don't take it to the shop, it's really easy to do. Oh, and you do have a chain press to link the new chain together, right? you'll need one of those.
