Front Axle Castle Nut

Anyone know the size of socket needed to remove this? 17mm is too small, and 24mm (which I got for the rear) is too big. I'm guessing 22mm? Can anyone confirm?

Back on this again. Anybody know how to get this nut off? Tried pb blaster that doesn't work. Was thinking of trying a torch to heat it, but afraid that might melt the speedo gears. Any suggestions? Its on there good, and I've already twisted my breakerbar trying...

Yeah, remove the cotter pin first.

Seriously, get a better breaker bar. I've never, ever seen a breaker bar bend. There's no excuse for that.

A blowtorch might work well, shouldn't damage the speedo, but you really shouldn't have to use anything but a breaker bar and a cheater bar.

In fact, you shouldn't even need anything besides a ratchet, or even the cheap 22mm wrench in the 250's tool kit. The whole point of a Castle nut is that there's no need or advantage to torquing it tightly--the cotter pin will prevent the nut from moving at all.

...Which, unfortunately, means that some idiot at one point in time probably lost the cotter pin and just put a bit of red loctite (permanent/requires heat to release) on the nut. In which case a blowtorch is the only way you're getting that bolt off.

Otherwise, a Hand Truck/Dolly handle works well for really stubborn bolts...

Well, I finally got it off the other night. It was on there wicked tight. I cleaned off the engine grime and was done earlier than expected so I said why not give it another shot. Since the drive of my 4" breakerbar was already twisted, I grabbed my old ratchet (that doesn't really ratchet anymore) and just layed on it. It finally budged a little. So I really laced into it and after about 20 minutes and nearly throwing my back out, I got it off. Wasn't any loctite in there, but that sucker was cranked down tight. Bruised the meat of my hand, even tho I had my riding gloves and a shop towel wrapped around the ratchet.

Sadly, my bike didn't come with any of those farkles like a "tool kit", or "manual". LOL. Just another wonderful inheritance from a PO. LOL
