Question about the chain...

Soo... I've put about 4000 miles without cleaning it or lubing it

I bought chain cleaner and lube the other day and will be getting a rear stand soon. I know it is terrible of me that I neglected my chain and so I was wondering how bad is it? I know it shouldn't look anything like the image had I cleaned it once in awhile... So should I just replace it? Was I ever close to dying from the risk of the chain just breaking while on the road? ;___;

Also, I know what you're probably thinking... I'm an idiot and I should sell my ninja :l

if you keep treating it like that, expect to replace it around 13k, something like that.

No worries. Just clean it and lube it every other tank (or every 3rd tank) of gas and you'll be fine

dont believe these people.

the only way to know if you need a chain is to see the actual condition of the chain performance wise. looking at how much rust is on the outside isnt going to tell you **** except that you dont take care of it. any binding links == get a new chain. 4000miles with no chain maintenance i would expect that chain is stretched and has bound links. it probably sounds rough when you ride and has a weird jerky feeling

also theres no indication of sprocket wear with the photo you posted. if the sprockets are worn (if the chain is worn, chances are the sprockets are worn) then you need to replace those if you replace your chain otherwise the worn sprockets will just cut into your nice new chain and stretch it out quicker

This. My OEM chain was neglected and DRASTICALLY out-lasted my later chains even though I made sure to treat them right. I always SAW what was happening to them first. LOOK and LISTEN. Inspect the O-rings and rollers (I've seen both missing on multipe chains). Note how often it needs adjustment. Inspect the teeth (I've seen severe wear). Ride safe!
