Slight idle issue

Hey guys, so i recently installed a k&n air filter and a slip on exhaust and When i took the bike out it was even more gutless than usual but i did some research on this forum and some others and found that shimming the needles should help my problem out quite a bit so yesterday i shimmed each needle with 2 washers 0.020 in thickness and the bike ran amazingly very responsive in the midrange and throughout with no power loss the only thing is now the bike comes back to idle very slowly and sometimes will jump around down there between 1.2k to 1.5 any ideas guys?

That normally points to either an air leak or a too-lean idle setting. If you're sure the carbs are seated in the rubber boots and the boots aren't cracked and leaking, see if an idle mixture adjustment cures it. Adjust the idle mixture screws for the highest idle speed.

Welcome to the board, Nelson!

As TJ and ducatiman suggested - adjust your idle mixture screws.

The general idea for setting the Idle Mixture screws is to get the highest hot idle speed as possible, even if both adjustments are not set exactly the same. Syncing the carbs is a good idea as well.

After getting the highest idle speed, I personally like to go about 1/8-turn out/richer, which seems to help smooth the transition to part-throttle metering.

Good to hear!

Seems they set them randomly from the factory.

As temps fluctuate you may need to make slight adjustments. Colder temps require a richer (more turns out) setting than warmer temps.

Always make your adjustments on a hot engine. You'll get good at keeping your hands off of the hot case as you make the adjustment. A properly sized screwdriver helps.

For me they were set at 1 1/2 left and 1 1/4 right from factory.
