taking bets: crank smoke

crank breather started smoking a bit on the 92 fzr today. i usually wont really worry about a little bit of oil, but it seemed a bit excessive. looking for ideas of causes before i get a chance to open it up. im thinking a transmission bearing surface is jacked and overheating smoking up some oil. lets take bets and whoever gets it right gets a free paperclip (pickup only)

Is the air filter drenched in oil? If so, I'm gonna say worn piston rings.

no oil up top. no smoke from the exhaust. just the crank breather. crank breather does have spray on it which i would expect as the transmission is directly below it.

Are you talking about a 1992 Yamaha FZR 600?

I would say that the clutch is the big generator of heat within the crankcase.

Faulty bearings reveal themselves by noise earlier than by heat, but what you suspect could be.

In my humble opinion, it is hard for a defective bearing to heat up that big mass of oil to the point of generating smoke, but it is easier for slipping clutch discs.

At what point in riding the bike did it start smoking? what was the engine/coolant temp and average ambient air temp? Humidity? Do you even have gauges on the FZR? If the breather is wet enough and the engine case is hot, it'll evaporate the oil on it and make some smoke. How much smoke are we talking about here though.

I agree with motofool about the whole heating up oil to cause smoke.

showed it to my mechanic (brother) he said its fine. he said some smoke out of the case breather is ok. normally it goes to the airbox and you dont see it. clutch and springs were recently replaced (under 10k ago) overall engine temp is fine.
