A really bad week

Hey Guys,

So last Friday I walked outside to my apartment parking lot to find that my SUV had been stolen. My first time dealing with anything like that, I check the apartments towing company and then file with the police. I'm covered in car insurance but am now a hardcore motorcycle only rider. It's cold and rainy and all the unfun things. I've also never choose to ride in cold or the rain so I don't have bad weather gear.

Then to make things worse, today my front tire started making a strange noisy that made it sound like it was about to fall off. I checked all the bolts and they were tight, but the sound got faster as I sped up, and slower as I slowed down. I checked the tires to see if they were rubbing and couldn't find anything. So I checked it in to my local shop. So I'm without transportation until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Hopefully they won't come back and tell me I have half the price of my bikes worth of repair needed.

To make the car theft worse I had both my tire lifts in my car's trunk, and my toolbox. So now I no longer even have the ability to do regular maintenance on my bike. I don't carry renters insurance so the items in the car aren't covered.

It sucks to have in one night a thousand+ drop in your bank account from deductibles and the knowledge that my SUV was a really really good deal when I got it.

Only two good things going right now, I can now get a truck to haul my bike. And I've made it through several phases of interviews towards a new job in California. Anyone in Cali have any problem with their 250 on hills? Just curious. Thanks for letting me vent.

I currently live in the worst place for fun riding. The city is a perfect grid, with stop signs and traffic lights at every intersection. They've done a wonderful job with the creeks and rivers to modify their paths to run parallel to the roads, I have no idea how it works. I have to get a ways away from my home before I get any decent curves or a hill or something. :P

*twitches at the mention of 250s having trouble on hills* Really? I was hoping we were all finally away from that.....and sorry to hear about your bad luck. Any reason you don't carry renter's insurance? Not 100% sure on the cost from other companies, but I have it for a couple thousand I believe and pay like $10 a month...pretty low payment for some peace of mind in these worst case scenarios.

You mean you wonder why you all don't shoot thieves. Go ahead and call us "crackers" but our PU's don't get jacked. I'm glad the guys looking at the bright side of this, as far as getting a PU instead of SUV, Cali on my mind, just a shame about the tools. Ride on bro.

No, I me WE as a people. In the unlikely event that this S.B. is arrested, he'll get a slap on the wrist and an EBT card.

It's a really crazy incident to have my car stolen. I can't think of a single person in my entire life that has had their car stolen in Texas. That's definitely not to say it doesn't happen, but I know people who leave their car unlocked because the cost of their stereo or CDs is much less than the cost of a broken window.

I don't carry renters insurance because I'm an idiot. I live an ultra frugal lifestyle right now, that I'm actually enjoying. I sleep on a "bed" of comforters and sleeping bags, with no mattress underneath it. My roommate and I have almost no furniture besides our computers desks and a dinning table. I'm not poor, I just don't have a desire to own anything right now when I'm willing to pick up and move to anywhere that sounds interesting and pays well. Also I just sort of assumed car insurance would cover car stuff, I didn't realize things from inside of the car weren't covered.

Sorry to hear about the theft. I had my nice mountain bike stolen from me recently. I was pretty angry. I try to remind myself though, it's just stuff. The most important things are family, friends and health.

I'm looking at the Bay Area. I'm not exactly sure where the company I've been interviewing with apparently has 3 offices in the area at different points around the bay.

I'm thinking it'll be a blast for riding. Currently my town is a perfectly gridded system with stop lights and stop signs at every intersection.

Car thieves make good targets at the gun range.

Could have been worse: They could have stolen your bike instead.
Maybe not all is lost: Most stolen cars are recovered within 30 days.
Any cash will be gone and personal electronics are probably already at the pawn shop. They probably wont have a clue what the motorcycle gear is so it might be left behind. If not, some bike insurance might cover that if it can be considered an accessory. Its worth a call.

That sucks about your bike having wheel issues. Maybe your wheel bearings are acting up?

Hope you get it back. But I'd still get some rain gear if you don't have it.

I think my comment on hills was taken differently than I intended. Obviously once the bike is in motion it's got plenty of power.

My main complaint with the bike is mainly 1st gear, and how quick I have to shift to really do anything. I've lightly considered a stronger bike just to have less shifting right at the start, but I dislike the look of pregen ninjas and the ninja500s.

My comment was more about city riding with hills. From what I've been told there are some insane hills in San Fransisco, and I was more curious about how starting going up steep inclines feels etc.

Last spring a friend and I rode Lake Okeechobee (Florida). The Hoover Dike was built around the circumference. Its basically a 50 foot high pile of dirt. With our pregens, we never noticed any hesitation going up the hill at all. However, we saw a few cars that couldn't make it unless they got a running start. Of course, there are a lot of places that have long ramps for cars, but we could easily get up the straight up ones.

So at least with the pregen, if a car can get up the hill, so can the Ninja.

I'm sorry to hear about your truck. If it makes you feel any better, my car was stolen 08/17... and I picked it up from the impound 12/10. Most of my items were still in the car, including a 25" tv I had in the backseat. The only real damage was to the door lock, the ignition switch and a dead battery. I hope your luck is just as good as mine!
