When you get 200km per tank, how much gas does it take to top off the tank? Take your kilometer/mileage number and divide it by how many liters/gallons you fill up with and that is your mpl/mpg

Ahh, ok.

So, I'll fill it all the way up today, reset my odo, ride it till half or wahtever, fill up all the way and see how much klicks I pull and do the math?

Ok.

Btw, how do you guys fill it up? Get off the bike and fill it all the way or do you leave some room?

Just to clarify, guys, I'm not trying to find my MPG.

I'm asking if getting 200 km with my full tank is decent.

We have 4.8 gal on our 2010 250's, 200 km is 124.3 miles.

That shold be 25.8 miles per gallon. Correct?

Are you really running bone dry when you fill up? You don't go by the 4.8 number, you go by what you actually used.

When my gas gauge hits Empty, I normally have between 195-215 miles. When I fill her up It only takes about 3.8-3.9 gallons. That means that there was almost another entire gallon left to use.

No, this probably is off by quite a bit. The tank needs to be completely full before you start, and it needs to be run completely dry(not just when the gauge says empty). Find out what your mileage is by dividing the miles you went on the last tank by the amount of gas that you just used to fill the tank back up. Once you have that number, multiply it by 4.8 gallons, and you'll have the true range of the bike.

Make sure that you are actually filling to the metal ring each time, don't just stop filling it when it kicks off the first time.

Ok, I finally filled my tank after installing the new 15t sprocket. I got between 48-50mpg on the stock gearing, now I'm getting 57.5 mpg. Do not let that statement fool you because I did ride more conservatively on the tank with the 15t sprocket. I found that, after installing the new sprocket, the bike is much more enjoyable to ride conservatively ,imo, so that's how I rode it. I will try to ride more aggressively (normal pace) on my next tank and see the difference. On the 57.5mpg tank, I only went WOT once and did 1 top speed run, other than that is was smooth sailing.

I found that I can now shift at 5k,6k, or 7k rpm without a problem and the bike seems to love it. After riding 230+ miles with the new sprocket I love it even more. It has consistently dropped my rpm down to 300-600 rpm above my speed (ie. 45mph is about 4.9k rpms) and it feels like there is so much more left in each gear even though it's a small difference. I'll post again once I find what my normal riding gets, mpg wise.

edit: I ride a mix of highway, twisties, and city on all my tanks.

HOW fuel EFFICIENT...

Had the chance to ride her yesterday with my fellow bikers yesterday,. travelled 280kms back and forth,,brimmed her up on our way to Bataan, and I had to fill her up when I was a few kilometers to my place...I was surprised that after 280 kilometers of riding, only 9.5 Liters of fuel was enough to load her tank..that's roughly 29kilometers to a liter..NOT bad..I should say...

That is 68 mpg if I'm doing my math right, and that is quite good mileage.

I'm assuming you mean UK MPG, in which case I get 70 MPG -- if you mean US MPG I'm getting around 58 MPG

What's your MPG average?

So as soon as I bought my bike I transitioned to using a phone app to keep track of how much my car insurance/maintenance/tire replacements/etc add to for both my SUV and my bike. I've also been keeping strict track of my bike's MPG and I'm averaging consistently 47mpg in the city. I don't ride on the highways but very rarely.

I've read old posts through Search and on other forums where people claim 70 to 80mpg in the city and higher when doing long trips. What am I do wrong or are they nuts? I don't accelerate any harder than the cars by my side with maybe a 2-3 all out accelerations per tank just for fun.

What's your mpg, and if mine is really low any suggestions?

We had a poll about this. Mine has changed due to changes in the bike and I need a few more tanks to come up with a good average for her again.

I dunno where you're finding info with other people getting significantly over 70 mpg's on the freeway. These bikes rev really high and suck gas at 70 or higher mph. Even with higher final gearing, the throttle has to be opened up more because the engine doesn't make enough torque for really high gearing, unless you live in Texas where it's really flat, so the mileage isn't going to magically increase to 80 mpg. My guess is the guys in that thread with 90+ mpg are running high gearing, went down a main jet size because the stock mains are rich, and are intentionally riding with fuel economy in mind.

There was one thread a while back about someone getting 100mpg on a ninja 250, but that guy was using insanely high gearing, shutting off the engine and coasting on the downhill sections of the freeway, tooling around town in a full tuck in 6th gear, and riding below the speed limit everywhere etc etc.

55-65 mpg is a realistic expectation from these bikes with some varied riding.

FWIW mine did about 62 all last season since I shimmed my needles. We'll see how it goes this season once I have the chance to jet properly for my opened up airbox/I might take out the airbox completely this summer.

Lately I've been getting low to mid 60's since the weather got cold and they switched to the winter blend gas. In the summer doing mostly highway at 70+ I get mid to high 60's on my pregen. If I run full saddlebags and cruise at 75-80 my mileage drops down to the high 50's.

Because 70 UK MPG is 58 US MPG -- chances are these people are quoting UK MPGs and not US ones - you guys have weird gallons in the states.

I got 48mpg on the last tank (135 miles, 3.021 gallons), but that was with a lot of city riding and 8-10 high speed laps around a track. I expect I usually get 50-60 if I'm conservative.

Is your bike shimmed or unshimmed? Out of curiousity.

Pretty sure im getting bad gas milage. in the 30's lately. Shimmed and slip on. Not sure though. -_-

30's?? has anything else been done to your bike?? When I put two washers on my needles, my mileage only dropped by 5 mpg.

Is there anything mechanically wrong with your bike?

Try the basics.
sync carbs,
run some cleaner through the carbs with the next tank of gas
try some gas without any ethanol in it
adjust valves if they're due
do you have oem jetting besides the shims? (main jets? mix screws setting?)

30's is mileage I would expect from a 10R, not a 250R

Nah man, totally 100% stock, I think there may be something wrong man. Check the easy stuff first, air filter, oil, some kind of blockage.

You should be getting nearly twice that, so I'm not sure what's wrong, unless you are WOT all the time 24/7

How many miles for one tank of gas?

How many miles should I expect from one tank of gas? The fuel gauge seems too inaccurate for me. I dont like the fact that it takes 5 minutes for it to show some type of reading without the needle slowly moving up.

I am wondering about city driving and also freeway driving.

The most I've done without filling is almost 250. I filled just over 4.7 gallons when I filled. On a regular basis, I tend to fill once I hit about 220.

This is also all city driving with excessive acceleration and speeding. You also have to consider whether or not the bike is leaned over when reading the fuel gauge.

The best fuel economy I've ever achieved is just over 61 MPG. I've also found that if I fill more often, you tend to get better fuel economy. I'm not quite sure why, I figure it may be since our gas tanks tend to vent so much, less fuel is lost to evaporation over 50 miles than over 200 miles. But at the same time, I find it hard to believe that that much fuel has evaporated and vented out. Who knows.

This thread needs to be divided into threads and polls for the different bikes. The poll is really meaningless because a pregen is going to get better mpg than a newgen and a newgen is going to do better than a ZX-10R and a ZX-10R is going to do better than a school bus. Basically, its comparing apples and oranges and not very useful.

Kevin's is the only post out of hundreds that doesn't relate to a ninjette. Yell at him, not the thread. That said, this has been in the new-gen tech section for years, yet people of both generations have likely been answering it, so it probably does include data from all years. Nevertheless, the data is still pretty clear in showing that one's mileage can vary quite a bit depending on riding style with these bikes, and most people get less than the 60+ mpg that is often listed as achievable with either generation.

Ok, so I've compiled all of my milage, receipts, and gas consumption since the 22nd of January.

I've used 54.553 gallons, traveled 2,553 miles, and my overall gas milage since January is 46.92 MPG. My PR for a fill up is 52 MPG. Over time I've learned a few things everyone can do to save a little gas.

-When coming to a stop light or a stop sign, pull in the clutch and coast then stop using your brakes. I've traved a 10th of a mile once.
-Try not to engine brake as much while coming to a stop
-if traffic permits, start in first, get some speed then shift up to 3, get some speed, shift up to 5th or 6th if you have enough engine and vehicle speed. I call this "MPG Quick Shifting"
-if the red light is super long, turn off your engine. Don't do this too often, or you can wear out your starter
-correct tire pressure
-getting into a semi-tuck position on speeds higher than 40mph

These tips might help a bit, but for me this has increased my MPG by a bit...not sure of a definite number though.

It is rather interesting to see a pretty standard bell curve in the results... well except for the 90+mpg

Usually polls on the internet are far from predictable...

I used an online calculator for 8 days of doing 136 miles for about £8 at 32pence a litire. Mine works out at around 77mpg.

I think the result is right anyway.

Is that in imperial gallons or US gallons?

Doesn't sound right to me.

£8 at 32pence a litre = 25 litres

1 liter = 0.264172052 US gallons, so

25 liters = 6.6 gallons

136 miles in 6.6 gallons = 20.6 mpg

Something is off here...

Also seeing as the tank only holds 4.7 us gal.

Now if you put in 8L with 136 miles then your mpg (us) would be 64.35. Much more likely.
