Installing a single pod air filter

I bought a K&N air filter, single pod. My mechanic didn't install it on my Ninja 250 05 because he had suggested I swap out the exhaust. I don't agree with this assessment but I wanted to get the pro's opinion on the matter.

Also, I know there is a guide on https://faq.ninja250.org on changing and doing the re adjusting the jets. I wanted to know if there was a super detailed guide on this site on the subject.

Someone pointed me to a guide to swap out the suspension with a gsxr one and that guide made it possible. If I had to do the air mod myself, I would like to be able to do it knowing I have a detailed guide on the matter. Not saying that the one in https://faq.ninja250.org isn't detailed, it's just that the guide for swapping out the suspension guide was more detailed on this site and I am hoping there is one similar for installing and jetting the carbs.

This thread has more jetting info, if that's what you mean - https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...tting+database

So it looks like you decided to keep the little Ninja (and do a few mods) in addition to your Gladius - right?

I posted over on SVRider.com when you asked for opinions on the subject.

hahaha yeah I did decide to keep it and also yes to the "do a few mods." ;D And I remember you helping me out! I actually did the same mod as the SFV650, I got the GSXR suspension on it. The air filter turn out NOT TO BE SO SIMPLE though. I'm going to check out that site.

Intake mods yields no benefits of any kind due to restrictive passages in head. Airbox and filter are HUGE and does not restrict flow in amy way. They're about same size as on my CBR600RR with 4x power and 4x airflow. Dyno-tests with and without airbox shows no improvements. Only effective intake mod is to port & polish head.

Best bolt-on mod is full 2-1 exhaust. Gets you lots more power and speed. About an additional 3-5 bhp.

As with any NA engine, biggest bang-for-buck & time is internal. Big-bore high-compression pistons will give 5x improvement of all external bolt-on mods combined.

Do you still have the airbox? As danno noted, not a lot of improvements to be had by ditching it. It makes the bike louder (and seem more powerful), but often softens the throttle response and low/mid-range torque.

A better filter in the box is just as good or better. The biggest advantage of not having an airbox is the ease of carb removal.

I was just in San Diego at MCRD last month for my son's Marine Corps graduation. Left WI just before a major late-spring snow hit this area and just got out of Denver in the nick of time. San Diego weather was perfect.

Not so here. Still in the 50s and rainy most of this week.

i swapped to a single pod filter on my new gen 250, and never could get it to run "right". always had an odd surging or lag, put the oem air box in with a drop in K&N filter and never looked back. keep the stock box, and run a drop in filter upgrade, you'll be happy. and be riding instead of tinkering with your bike all the time trying to make it work.

Lots of people also report stumbling issues when hitting crosswinds with pod-filters.

With nimble hands and exact procedure, you can actually remove pre-gen carbs easily without removing air-box. Just push it to back of bike and you get 1/4" clearance between carbs and intake-boots to remove. I'll do DIY with photos next time I remove my pre-gen carbs.

i could pull my carbs on my new gen without removing the air box, i did unbolt it and slide it rearwards some to gain some needed room.

As delivered, my extended Ducati airbox housed the battery, coils and some electrical poop too. A certain ordeal to get to the carbs. I cut and separated the sections from one another. I can now remove either electrics OR filter section independently, no longer need to remove it ALL to get to carbs. Carb removal now a 10 minute breeze. Electrical removal does not necessitate putzing with any carb stuff.

We all find our ways, tricks and shortcuts where applicable.

The EX500 airbox also slides back, allowing just enough clearance for carb removal....after EZ removal of battery and some bracketry. Cake, actually, once you get the routine down.
