ATGATT??? why not WYGOD???
atgatt, it's such a silly acronym. i propose an alternative:
W.Y.G.O.D. - Wear Your Gear Or Die think about it, everytime you see a squid, look heavenward and just say "Why God?!?!?" lol your thoughts please.

While I like your creativity, I prefer ATGATT because it's simply a statement. While I know that when you say WYGOD you aren't necessarily telling someone to wear their own gear, but it could be taken that way. I may have to think of it more, but since the first time I heard ATGATT, it really resonated with me.
Now maybe you can work on an alternative term for chicken strips. I've always thought that was kind of stupid for some reason lol. |

You can still die even if you're wearing all your gear. Gear only minimizes damage, it doesn't eliminate it.

I'm pretty tired of that ATGATT preaching. Anyone going on two wheels knows about how people die from accidents.

Was on a group ride yesterday and made it my point to stick with the leader of the ride (who rails the backroads on a Yam 250 WRX) and a couple other very experienced and smooth riders. A couple blind and downhill corners on the ride reminded me that no matter how much gear I wear its not going to save me from the rock walls on the right or a car crossing the yellow stripe on the left. Now I had everything but protective pants on, but the best safety item is your your mind. After the 80 mile ride I was happy that I kept the leader and one other guy in site as it improved my line choice, but I really think I over-pushed myself and will be happy to ride mid pack next time.

I'll continue preaching ATGATT, but I fully understand your right to not listen. It's as easy as putting someone on your ignore list. Really easy
This forum is about sharing and learning from one another. Many of the new riders who come here have no clue about what is "proper" and perhaps being reminded may help point them in the right direction. |

People are always free to make whatever choices they like, no matter how poorly thought through. But I do find it valuable for sites like this to continue to at least try to let people know about what's out there, and what conclusions experienced motorcyclists have come to for their own gear choices.

Wear Your Gear Or Die leaves out to many lessdrastic things. Short of death (way short) good clothing prevents (or lessens road rash, maybe even a broken elbow or knee cap), eye protection keeps that big flying from blinding you, gloves keep that pebble from a car from making your hand come off the grip when it hits you. Friend of mine (HD rider, and I don't want to stereotype) wears no helmet, fingerless gloves, and then complains about the cold on a great 60 degree riding day.

I completely agree, it was thanks to this site i understood the value of protective gear, without this site, i'd probably wear daisy dukes and tank tops, it was the image i had in mind prior to getting a bike. I came across a guy that said he never wears protective gear, not even a helmet, because its not a law in pennsylvania. Anyway, i said my piece by saying it only adds protection and you should consider getting gear. He said no he doesn't need it. I did my part, but i'm not going to go out of my way to help him understand the importance, thats why i say everyone riding are grown ass adults. i just pray for the people that don't gear up, cuz IF they happen to get into the slightest accident, its going to hurt..big time!

Aerostitch or GTFO.
I'm sorry; I just think every thread about gear needs this extremist viewpoint, real or not.

It's fine...provided that all you do is stand around a starbucks
I'm kidding. I actually don't fit very well into A* gear, but I love the quality of their stuff! That's another thing...fit is very important. Not just to keep armour and whatever in place, but in terms of comfort as well. I cannot, to this day, use any off the shelf riding pants as they hinder my ability to move my legs while riding. So I just strap on as much armour under my jeans as I can find hahaha. Newbies should definitely be told to strap up with everything they have. Gearing up properly is about being smart. Obviously, being smart requires the right kind of experience...and if you have none...it's better to go overboard. |

I was admittedly vague there. The intent was to express the view of some "real motorcyclists" that you must immediately buy a one-piece touring suit as soon as you buy a bike, and you must wear it religiously while on said bike. Furthermore, it mustn't be made by a "poser" brand for "squids". I have actually seen this sentiment put forth by a (very) few folks, hence the extremist label. Like I said, I find it amusing.

My theory on gear is the same as bikes. There is a danger riding, we hear about it all the time, people tell us not to ride we do it anyway as we know the risks and accept them. A person that decides to not wear gear at all is doing the same, they know the risks and accept them. The only exception is if a person doesn't know that all this gear exists, if that is the case then they were foolish to accept the risk of riding without doing the leg work or research on it.
I'll be honest I do not wear riding pants except for dedicated riding or the twisties, it's a matter convience for my commute. For me the risk is worth the convince, yours may be diffrent. Thank god we live where we can make that personal choice. |

These threads make me laugh, for a very short time. I have been riding one form or another of bike for 42 years and have worn everything, and near nothing. We don't have a helmet law in CO, thanks be we still have the right to choose something for ourselves. I wear a helmet 98% of the time but I do enjoy riding my loud ass Buell sometimes without, I also ride in jeans, running shoes and a T once in awhile. I must be a squid?
I really don't care what you wear and you shouldn't let my choices bother you. It is risk assessment and acceptance of the consequences. When I hit the hills or go to the track I have full leathers, when I go dirt biking I have full gear. When I teach people to ride or talk about it to others, I will promote as much gear as they can afford but I don't slam them or call people names because they don't want to wear it either. In the same breath, I don't like to stereotype riders because of the bike they enjoy. |
