Thumbs down $140 Oil Change Avoid this dealer in NYC.

I went to the dealer and got quoted 140 including tax for an oil change. But they said it wasn't just an oil change. They will check all fluids, readjust the chain, clean it up, and re-oil the chain. When I checked the chain it looks like nothing was done, and not sure if they did anything else other than the oil change. I asked the service manager about the discrepancies in his story. He quickly corrected himself and said we only oil and re-adjust the chain.

2 thumbs down to New York HONDA and Yamaha in Queens NY.

Sorry to hear that. I think they're the same company as Cross Bay Honda. I'd heard not to go to either of them for service. From what I remember there are Kawasaki dealers in Queens Village and Hicksville. Or how about the dealer you purchased from?

Was this a scheduled service? If not, sounds like you might want to start doing your own oil changes and maintenance. Wow!

You should be doing your own maintenance anyway.
Changing the oil and lubing/adjusting chain is probably the two easiest tasks on the 250R.

Actually...changing the brake pads is the easiest.

+1.
Learn how to do it yourself. An oil change with Mobil 1 synthetic only costs me about $25!

I doubt they broke a law, but that might be worth a complaint to the appropriate governing body. FTC?

There's an excellent DIY right here. http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=10780

Save yourself $100. That's a brand new tire.

i can feel your pain, try walking in there as a woman. you can literally hear the ka-ching and see the dollar signs in their eyes before requesting any service. i usually drop it off and have my husband pick it up. he's a man who will never be ripped off.

anyhow, it really isn't about doing this yourself. it's about accesibility. where i live i don't have the luxury of a driveway or a garage - not even a parking lot. i really, really, really miss having that outdoor space for my toys.

i wonder if there's a garage that rents out space for things like this...?

Without a garage driveway or parking space, where the **** do you park your bike? It doesn't take any more space to do an oil change than wherever it's parked.

Most major cities have buisinesses that rent a shop and tools. Usually about $12-$20 an hour. If not, find a mom and pop repair shop and ask if you can rent a bay for hour. All else fails us the parkinglog infront of your local Orielly or Autozone. They always have people working on their cars.

My dealer charges about the same which is a total rip off of course. Which is why once I am threw paying for my bike they won't be seeing it again. And they lube my chain horribly. There was so much grime on it I just had to say f this maintenance plan I'll do it myself. Now that I know bikes are just as easy to work on as cars I'm doing almost everything by myself, because almost all of these motorcycle dealers are rip offs. Now I know to never buy a maintenance plan if I ever get another bike.

Didn't the dealer's receipt include a break-down of all the items services..?
Surely for that price they did more than just change the oil... At a minimum they should have done a complete check-up and lubing of all cables and chains, inspect and tighten various mounts and bolts, etc.

lux is right, i park in a parking garage. a few months after parking in the street some guys tried to lift it into a cargo van and take off. twelve hours later i found a local parking garage where she's well protected. working on my bike in the parking garage is out of the question. the valet's keep a very watchful eye anyone who enters the parking area because they keep all the car keys in the ignition and the windows cracked. they only allow me to enter the parking area because the valet's don't have a motorcycle licenses.

that's new york for ya. maybe if i slip them a twenty and work in a tank top they'll look the other way.

Why would you go to Honda to Service your Kawasaki?? That's like bringing your Kawasaki to Harley-Davidson for service.

Read this post several times, and decided not to comment. Without a breakdown of exactly what they did its hard to know. BUT if all they did was change the oil for that price I have an idea.

Craigslist is everywhere. Queens no doubt has its own. I would post under motorcycles for sale how great a job they did on your oil change , and how you got a great deal where they only charged you only 140 dollars!

It may be tongue in cheek where you are actually not bad mouthing them. Just stating fact, and how happy you are about it. Many, many people who ride are always hawking craigslist motorcycles. Lot of people will be seeing it. It will be kinda like smiling at them while at the same time giving them the finger.

Kenny, he charged a bit too much. I live about 15 minutes from there in Malverne. Netx time you're ready, e-me a few days before, bring your own oil, filter ( be sure you get one that includes the o-ring) and a crush washer. Even waiting for the oil to drip out, this is no more than 20 minutes and a few more to clean up. If you can bring an empty gallon jug that would be good too. Suburban living has it's benefits...like a driveway.

$20 is like 180.000 Rp! even that is a ripoff! hahaha

in Bali the OEM kawasaki oil costs 25.000 x 2 i think, so 50.000 Rp, the filter is 45.000 Rp, and the service is something like 60.000, so, total 155.000 Rp = $17

hihi

but since my free services are over, i do it all myself, so it only costs me the oil and filters! and it takes 20 times less! damn kawi dealer here is sooo slow!

IMO, do all the service to your own bike is part of the fun to keep a bike. And it's already much easier than servicing a car. Especially we have some nice write-ups here. Cheer up from Queens~~~

I use Shell vsx 4t for the oil, so 45.000 x 2 90.000 for the oil
but now, I rather do it myself. It's more fun than watching those mechanic do all the works!

since less than a year now they have this new regulation at the kawasaki place... clients are NOT allowed into the mechanic area! i dont like that, since i have done a lot of work on my bike, and know how certain things need to be put together, like the K&N filter pod which they messed up. and then when i got home i had to take the bike apart again and redo the job all over again!

so that makes me even less willing to bring the bike there.

on top of it, i love working on the bike myself, im so picky with the way it should be done that i don't like it when others manhandle my bike, haha

Re: Shell Oil, hehe i did not think about that! i think i want to change to another oil too, i used to use Repsol when i had my ninja 150RR, and that made a big difference compared to the kawasaki oil... Miko, how is your experience with the shell oil? im not sure yet what to use~

Shell oil is better than the oem oil, the gear changing is alot smoother. and is not to expensive either
It's a reasonable upgrade from those green Kawasaki oil
