If only we could "Filter" through traffic here.

Although with motorcycles being allowed in the Carpool lanes that does speed my commute.

I save about 1/2 an hour each way when I commute to work on the bike.

Seems reasonable to me. Though I'm not sure about their parking argument; people who don't know each other probably won't share a parking space.

I've shared a parking space with a motorcycle that belonged to a stranger, but it was in the Deals Gap area where there are a lot of motorcycles, and the restaurant parking lot was pretty full.

On the down side, I've heard of motorcyclists getting parking tickets for sharing metered spaces. I think that's really counterproductive.

Ticketed for sharing metered spaces- yeah, I'd agree that's not going to encourage bikes to share anything. I'm not a fan of bikes parking on sidewalks, or anything, but sharing a space should be ok.

I would ride to work more often if I could filter, too. My commute is about an hour and a half each way right now and about half that is the result of sitting through lights for three to four cycles several times along the way. There's a bill in the state house here to allow filtering at stop lights, but it has sat in committee for two legislative sessions and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Splitting lanes is a bit nerve wracking for the first little bit, but once you get the hang of it it's not bad. I am glad California legalized it, and I hope other states follow suit.

Yeah! Pretty much my entire commute to Gilead was lane-splitting!
Or Sunday afternoon between S.B. and Ventura. Choose 2-hrs by car or 30-minute splitting!
It took me 7-hrs to get from S.B. to Costa Mesa one time, wish I had taken the bike that day!!!

I must say that splitting in Bay Area is definitely much more challenging than in SoCal. Drivers up here seems much more intense and anxious in rush-hour traffic. More *sshats in lifted trucks moving over trying to squeeze me as I come up to them. But they're too scared of bumping the car next to them, so they always leave enough room for me to squeeze through! hahahahahah

Advantage to having a little bike- we require less space to split safely.

i was splitting lanes on the oakland bay bridge on a vulcan 500. i was following a sportbike. i passed a van and hit is side mirror( lightly) i keep on going but was quite rattled. it takes intense concentration and iron nerve.

What part of bike did you hit mirror with? With cruiser-type bikes, it may be bars, which can be quite dangerous if you hit mirror hard. Nice thing about sportbikes is they tend to be narrow with mirrors being widest part. Those just fold out of way if you tap something.

Compared two month's worth of commute expenses from my Gilead contract. First two months I drove and racked up about $450/m in gas and toll-charges. The last month I was there, I rode my CBR exclusively and qualified for 1/2-price toll and much better MPG. Ended up spending $250 that last month, or almost half.

Yep, got to be careful not to knock into the cars. Sometimes I have to pause just a moment to let one of the cars get offset from the one next to it, so that I have a gap where I won't hit anybody.

Yeah, I have a 2-step wiggle I do to clear both mirrors. It's very rare that there are two car mirrors exactly side-by-side. Usually they're offset, one further down road than other. Coming up to 1st mirror, I'll lean hip towards 1st-car's and push bike in opposite direction to clear its mirror. Then lean hip back other way and flip bike back over to other side to clear 2nd-car's mirror. Meanwhile, tyres and shoulders still move in straight line down road.

I commonly end up with two car mirrors close together. But traffic also moves enough that one of them will get ahead in just a second, then I can do the little jiggle to get past one then the other.
