Starter seemingly misaligned with gear
It feels im posting so often here, apologies but my bikes just a mess rn
Anyways, I went down a month ago and recently started working towards gettign the bike running again. Already discovered carb and electrical issues though I now have a starter issue. Most of the time itll crank normally, but sometimes ill make a nasty sound like the gear skipped, stop, then get free again if you hold it down. My friend who heard the sound said it was the same sound his truck made when the starter wasnt aligned with the flywheel right. This sounds about right, though I am unsure how it would be possible for it to be misaligned. It can only go in one way and can only go in if the gear is meshed. I took the starter out and both gears look just fine. Ideas? How bad of an idea would it be to keep using the bike if I cant find a solution before its ridable again? |

The chances are that this is a result of normal wear over the years, and the starter's overrunning clutch is slipping. Post #3 of this thread gives the part numbers for the parts of that clutch: https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=244118
The page at Partzilla has changed, so that link doesn't work. The page is now here: https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/ka.../starter-motor |

I haven't had mine apart. Post #3 of the thread I linked to gives three part numbers for the parts that wear, but it would be a good idea to take yours apart before deciding what it needs. I'd think that taking the starter out, which you have practice with, is most of the work, but maybe someone here who's done it can shed some light.
