[cycleworld.com] - Yamaha’s Y-Connect Tech

Yamaha debuts its new Y-Connect, a system that enables more seamless connectivity between rider’s smartphones and their bikes.

Along with 2023 model updates, Yamaha also released its new Y-Connect technology. (Yamaha Motor Corp./)Yamaha kept things fairly drama-free at EICMA this year with the bLU cRU content to roll out its new XMAX sport scooter as well as announcing minor updates to its Tracer 9 GT and Niken models. Nothing earth-shattering to be sure, but oftentimes the EICMA model news will overshadow any incoming tech innovations, which is where Yamaha also made another announcement: the debut of its new Y-Connect tech.

Y-Connect will debut on Yamaha’s new 2023 XMAX scooter. (Yamaha Motor Corp./)It may not have received much attention because, frankly, the Y-Connect system (officially, Yamaha Motorcycle Connect) is a decidedly unsexy, practical tech solution that seeks to make riders’ onboard experience a bit more engaging by allowing a direct link from the bike to their smartphone. In short, the system is meant to enable a wider range of functionality with a simpler interface, making the act of staying connected more convenient. See? Unsexy.

The tech debuts with the new 2023 XMAX scooter as well as the 2023 model year MT-07, with Yamaha planning to roll out various levels of functionality. For instance, for the 2023 MT-07 without handlebar controls, the Y-Connect will support phone, text, and email notifications; move up to the 2023 XMAX with handlebar controls, and you’ll be able to experience a fully interactive turn-by-turn satellite navigation display with handlebar-mounted phone, music, and navigation controls (this will be exclusive to the 2023 XMAX’s more advanced version).

You knew there’d be an app too though, right? Yep, the new Y-Connect smartphone app (available for either iOS or Android) allows information to be shared via wireless Bluetooth both from the rider’s phone to the motorcycle’s TFT display and from the motorcycle’s Communication Control Unit (CCU) to the Y-Connect app. Yamaha says that allows a wide range of vehicle operating info to be collected and displayed within the app.

Yamaha will be releasing Y-Connect in various levels of functionality; the 2023 MT-07 for example will have the pared-down version. (Yamaha Motor Corp./)There are other Y-Connect features that can be unlocked too, depending on the bike model. For onboard navigation, riders can install the Garmin StreetCross app on their smartphone and pair it to the bike’s CCU. The bike’s TFT display then serves as an turn-by-turn nav system enabled via StreetCross (available for either iOS or Android).

Again, with the Y-Connect app on your smartphone, paired to the bike’s CCU, you can receive text, email, and call notifications, as well as information like weather, time, and connection status displayed on the bike’s TFT screen. A range of other features are available, like the RevsDashboard screen, which displays data including engine rpm, throttle opening, acceleration, fuel consumption, and more. Riders can also generate a personal riding log to track ride info like time, route, average speed, fuel consumed, average engine rpm, odometer record.

Yamaha says the Y-Connect app is live now. For more info, see yamahamotorsports.com.
