Carburetor vacuum hoses
I'm in the process of changing my vacuum hoses on my carburetor.
I know fuel does not flow through the vacuum hoses but they smell like gas... Do I need to find replacement hoses that are fuel rated? Auto parts store sells windshield washer/ vacuum multi function hoses, can I use those or should I get a true vacuum hose because of hose collapse under vacuum? If I don't need fuel rated hose what material should I get, I've seen polyurethane, silicone, and rubber available? Or will all of those work, just my preference? Thanks for your help! |

@ducatiman will have your answer, but in general I use the same type of hose for vacuum lines that I use for fuel lines, in the right size, of course.
I've been using Tygon® F-4040-A tubing. I got it here, but there are many suppliers: https://www.mcmaster.com/tygon-f-404...nd-lubricants/ |

However, for vacuum applications, would likely be fine, as would auto parts vac line. Though correct sizing is important, not too loose, not too tight, in any appllcation.

I wonder what they mean by "ethanol based gasoline", since gasoline with 10% ethanol isn't ethanol based, it's gasoline based with some ethanol added. I wonder it they're referring to E85, which would qualify as ethanol based. allseasonsparts.com sells it, and they say "Ethanol: Compatible with greater than 10% ethanol fuel". This summary of Tygon products doesn't have the warning eithe: https://docs.rs-online.com/7820/0900766b81656fcc.pdf I think I'll continue to use it as I have been and not worry about E10 compatibility. |

Thanks for the replies and interest so far!
So what I think I'm hearing is yes the 3/32 and 5/32 carburetor vacuum hoses need to be rated for gas. |

I got the answer below from an engineer at Saint Gobain. In my experience, it will last for at least several years.
If you don't mind opaque black like the stock tubing, Viton might last longer. McMaster-Carr has Viton tubing in a variety of sizes: https://www.mcmaster.com/tubing/plas...e-name~viton-/ Jim, Tygon F-4040-A is compatible with pump gasoline that contains ethanol. Although it is compatible, because it is a plasticized formulation you may eventually notice the tube get stiffer as the plasticizer extracts which could eventually lead to cracking. It is impossible to estimate how long that would be as it depends on the application and environment how long it would last before needing to be replaced. Any other questions let me know.
