I hate to be the one to say it, but this whole thing could have been prevented by more seat time/experience. So the thought of you on something with essentially 5 times the power scares me. On the other hand, I know you struggle with the same thing that I do (and all larger guys like us). And that is the highway experience, as a whole. I know that 99% of the guys on here will jump on my ass and scream about how the 250 can easily drive on the highway, some will even admit that as long as you drive defensively you will be alright.

However as you learned the hard way most drivers in FL don't give motorcyclists a chance to drive defensively. They will not hesitate to ride your ass, or brake check you (I know you remember my altercation). So maybe you should talk to Bill. Part of me wishes I had a 650 (Not a 600) most of the time I get on the highway.

If I was looking to buy a bike right now, I would look at a leftover ER-6N (going for less then 250s) with an Ermax Seat Cowl and an aftermarket windshield (I like the MRA RO, and the Ermax)

ER-6ns are weird looking. Don't get one. Plus, they don't have a lot of fairings for you to hang lights on... I know that's important to you.

And you would really want a windshield for highway use. Good call.

This is all opinion.

No. Don't get a 600+cc bike yet.

If you were some punk kid (like Mat), it would be fun to step on you and squash your dreams and hopes (like I do to Mat.) I think, honestly speaking, that you have the maturity (unlike Mat) to not go busting wheelies all over the place or riding like a retard (sorry, I saw the commercials, but I'm a jerk.) This thing is... a 600 will kill you. They're a bit much on throttle response and power. The other option is one of the three 650s (ER-6n, 650r, and Versys.)

I'll break them down a bit:
The Versys is really a nice ride, but they sit very high. You're about my height and weight (I think you have an inch or two on me on height) and you would likely feel very top heavy on one, especially at lights. The guy I work with has one, and I've ridden it a bit. It's a terrific ride from 5 MPH on. Other than that, I'm on my toes on a 400+lb bike at lights. Plus, they're more expensive than the other two. On the plus side, they're more comfortable, and make power better down low.

The other two, the Ninja 650R and ER-6n have more in common than not. The ER-6n costs less, and looks more unique than the 650R. The 650R has wind protection. An ER-6n at speed beats the rider through the wind, face first. Nice at 40 MPH, kind of rough at 80. I have not ridden a 650R, but since the riding position is the same as an ER-6n, as is the motor, suspension, and tires... I bet that other than wind blast, they're one for one in comparison.

Having said all that, why do I say no to the larger bike? It goes back to a conversation we had during the Harley ride. I remember we were talking about the "box" in the MSF course, and how you said you would have had a hard time negotiating it with the 250. My ER-6n does not handle as well as my 250 did in a parking lot. It handles well enough, and I'm 100% sure I could negotiate an MSF "box" with it. But I could do it easier on a 250. The 650 has it's weight sitting a bit higher, and it weighs more. You would really feel this weight if it started to lean over while still or slow. If you're still working on handling on the 250... Don't go larger yet. I suggest a used 250, pre or current gen, that you can ride around on then sell for close to what you paid for it if you decide you want a bigger bike.

Hey, on the bright side, any crash you walk away from (or hobble) is a good one. Sucks though, hope you aren't too banged up.

That, too. A Hyosung 250, as well. But I'd stick with the Honda or Kawi.

From what I understand the hyosung is a bit sluggish. More weight for the bike than power to move it. This seems less than ideal for the Orlando area. I would also be concerned about dealer support.

I remember reviews saying they were mostly comparable for performance with the Ninjette. However, they took a knock on fit and finish, and dealer support is definitely shaky. I've literally seen parts fall of a new United Motors 650 (made by Hyosung, sold under a different name.)

Like I said, I would buy another Ninjette, and likely as not have no problem with the Honda, either.

Mat I don't know that more experience on my behalf will make others stop at red lights. The choice I made was the one that led to the best physical outcome for my body. In that case it was a f*#k the bike situation, u want to survive! So same size bike or not I can't avoid idiots. I mean had I been in my car an accident still would have occurred only difference is he prob wouldn't have gotten away then. As for a 650vs600. It will likely come down to insurance. I can financially justify buying a bike I will want to get rid of in less than a year. And have to put money into more performance in the mean time. From the reviews I have read today the 650 is a reasonable learner/novice bike. Especially for guys my size. The 250 is capable of hauling me around, but it doesn't like my weight. So I will go look at them. The ER-6n I just don't like the lack of fairing. If I was stunting it, sure thing but for every day use. That is if I even buy. I have heard alot of people say ur so lucky, and I agree. I think it's luck that the intersection I was at was open enough to see that it was about to get ugly, and luck that no one was beside me, and luck I walked away. But T the same time skill and instinct to take the bike down with minimal damage to me. The longer I have to think about it (not riding, injured) the more it makes me question if I'm gonna want to ride again any time soon. A.) I don't want to get the invincible feeling, b.) I can't afford to wreck again.

Yeah I found it on a Kawi website one time saved a pic of it. Asked them at KMS what they could pull as far as a deal. They did it for like $72 I think. And had a 2010 black in stock. I walked out that day with it. Carried on my ride with Kat

Insurance wise, I priced a ZX-6 vs. a 650R... It was three times as much. Of course, everyone's insurance costs are different. But I would absolutely check insurance costs before making a decision on that one.

A friend of mine (single, 25 y/o male, reasonable driving record) found out the insurance for a new ZX-6 would cost more than the new bike payments for him. Ouch!

Add me too that list. Originally I wanted the zx6r, but I would have had to go uninsured, and no way I was going to be a new rider without insurance and a supersport....The 650 has much better rates and will most likely be my upgrade bike when the time is right. The zx6r is one sexy bike though. I'm still trying to get myself to like the 650r's look a bit more.

That's the reason I talked him out of a SS today. Iirc he was quoted $215 a month for a zx6

Well he already has 1 accident and 1 total bike claim. That probably affects it. I can get an ss for less than 1k a year, but I have no accidents and no tickets on my insurance, and I am 33.

you can get a windshield for the triumph...and yeah they are pricey. I think if you decide to get back in the saddle Just get another Ninja. I don;t think u can go wrong with it..besides you can pretty much sell it for what you paid for it should u decide to upgrade or abandon riding altogether. .

I'm in no rush really. I just called the dealer yesterday as my choke is not working to set up a service appointment and get the 600 mile service out of the way. The salesman remembered me and how I walked in looking for a 650 but I did not care to pay 7100 before all the fees of a new bike. So he brought up a used 650 that just came in and wants to have me check it out.

I really like my 250 though so most likely I'll walk out with my fixed 250 and continue to learn on it for quite awhile. I have no need for extra power at this point but fuel injection, low end torque, and a smoother ride on the highway would be nice. If I get a sick deal, I might and I'm sure I'll get flamed ha. But more than likely I'll be still enjoying the two fiddy!

What year is the used 650? How much is it? Where is Orlando Kawasaki?

It's listed at 5499 right now, but KBB says 4500, so I'm sure there is room for negotiation. It's a 2009, green. The dealer is over off Colonial right after you go under the 417 over in east Orlando.
