It was only a matter of time before I went down...

On my knee that is!!!! I finally drug a knee. After some quick coaching from a very generous fellow up at the Gap today, I got up the nerve, and the speed to get her all the way down. It's a pretty intense feeling. Your head is right next to the pavement. So cool. Spent 7 hours up there today going back and forth as well as meeting new folks. I had many comments on my riding, and even more on the bike. 3 people swore they were going to get a new Ninja 250 as their first bike. One girl up there even had a pink pregen.

In some ways it was harder to get down than I thought, in other ways not so much. I was doing everything right except how I held the handlebars. Apparently, you hold them like you would a screwdriver, or pool stick. You don't hold them like a baseball bat. With that tip I got my right knee down twice. By the time I did it the first time I was so tired and in so much pain I scaled back my riding so I could make it home safely.

Kkim, no complaints about dragging hard parts. My bike did a good job today. Several guys on 600's were staying with me but not wanting to pass. With the 250 I can go in anywhere from 10-20 mph faster and carry the corner speed where as the big boys have to rely on their power to pull out of the turn.

glad you were able to accomplish this. I too was able to knee drag for a quick second last weekend in SD, 3x in a row. 2x on my left side, 1x on the right + toe dragged. yes it's a great feeling, altho it's time for new tires as riders were telling me these stock BT045s are not sticking so well to the ground on the turns

congrats!

Patrick, I felt like my stock IRC's were wanting to slide a smidge. I think it just might have been the front tire trying to tuck in a bit. I still have about 2mm of my rear tire that hasn't been ridden on. It seems to hold fine.

I hit a rock early on in the day in a tight turn and it ended in a tank slapper. I never even saw it. The front end just lifted up, rolled off the rock and landed back in a turned position. I think it was probably good that it happened so fast because I didn't change my steering input, lean angle or speed. I think that's what saved me. Tragically there were 3 accidents today. All cruisers. One guy was trying to show off. 2 just ran off the road. One ended in a broken shoulder.

Remember everyone, better to wish you were faster than wish you were slower. Be careful out there and have fun!!!

Sounds like you're having fun (rubbing it in our face that you're at Deal's). Take some pictures so you can look back at your accomplishment years later.

How have to "coppers" been? I'm headed up in late June but might miss the Gap if the police are busting everyone. I might just ride the surrounding areas.

Congrats! Don't let it get to your head or you'll be dragging you arse.

There are cops around, but they stay in the same places and are easily avoidable. As long as you aren't doing anything stupid, like wheelies, crossing the line, absurd speeding, you are fine. People usually get pulled over at the Gravel Pits and after the triple digit straights towards the NC side of the Gap. Give me a shout when you make it up here and you can take me out to lunch or something. j/k, but seriously, give us a shout.

It'll probably be awhile before I drag again. It uses alot of muscles I haven't used before. I'm in alot of pain from riding all day. Though I can feel where my arms and legs are stronger.

Snake, hook me up with $300 and I'll make it to a track day.

Ryam, sore feet, ankles, shins, knees, thighs, back, arms, wrists and hands. I think alot of it has to do with #1 the day before I was out on the boat all day and #2 improper form.

Dragging is strange. Instead of trying to drag I just kept going faster and faster. It naturally makes you drag your knee. It's odd having your face only a couple of inches from the asphalt at 40-50mph though. Focus, focus, focus.

Hmm, well CB, if there's something I learned from draggin knee, it's that you don't have to be going fast necessarily, just have good form: get your butt off that bike, push the bar in the opposite/throw the bike to the other side, and throttle

that's what worked for me. I was able to touch knee on a 20mph posted turn at maybe 40mph.. I would usually go that fast on those turns before I was able to get knee down.

Patrick, I've heard the same thing, I've also heard you can go fast without dragging knee. It's a personal preference for some I reckon. Need to get some pics posted of you layin it over!!!

I started laughing out loud. It's scary but so much fun. Can you maintain a drag at less than 20mph? Or is it a touch and go thing?

you can maintain it. its the same physics as at 60, but you've got a much tighter turn.

Agree - I know a guy with decades of riding (road, trials, enduros, mx (scrambles back when he started), road racing) he won races (not track days) but AMA road races without dragging the knee or sliding the tires in the 500cc class. He still leaned wicked in the turns but his knees both pressed into the tank.

There's a guy up at the Dragon named Kamal. He has a GSXR 600. When He turns he drags, but doesn't move his butt. If you look at his crash bars they are ground down to a point where he scrapes them across the pavement.

I assume dragging the knee at any speed is just to know where your max lean angle is at, any more you lose traction. I can also see it saving a low side if you catch it fast enough like I read in a previous post someone had done. So based on what Greg wrote, if you know your limits on the bikes lean angle well a knee is just that little added tool to gauge things, but not always necessary.

Agreed, Ryam. WHen you are down there you can definately tell you are riding on the limits. Do it right and it is safe as sitting up, do it wrong and I'm sure it ends pretty nasty. I love sitting in the corners and watching the guys go by. They keep a steady throttle and all you hear is the scrape between the plastic and the pavement as they go around. It's incredible.

look into your local track day or racing orgs and see about corner working. you get paid to have the best seat in the house and watch the races. you usually get a 2 way radio too so you get to hear all the work and talk going on behind the scenes.

its also a pretty good way to watch some fast guys and study the different techniques they all use for lines, body position, where they get on the brakes, where they get on the gas, how they crash, how they don't crash, etc.

CB, you suck!!! :P I am SOOOOO jealous! I wish I could ride back and forth on The Dragon all day. Can't wait to hook up in September with you girl. It'll be great. Too bad I won't have my Ninja with me to see what it feels like to hug those curves. The Spyder will just have to suffice.

No knee dragging here, and least not yet, on this bike anyways ... but in the past I've drug a few on my other (long gone) bikes ...

Enjoy!

Will do Dragon Girl. I've been looking at getting a Kawi ZRX 1200 for the trip. I originally wanted a more sporty bike (CBR1000rr) but I might get a REX for the trip up north (a green one). I think I will enjoy the REX more in the long run. Actually, I think my body will enjoy the riding postion better.

Anyone seen Role Models? I can stand on a rock and give a cool speech with some wicked facepaint. I feel like I need a sword and a neat coat of arms. OK... maybe I went a little too far.

I think I'm going to get a vanity plate that says drgths (Drag This) or if I can find a good spelling (Catch This).

How about LUV2DRG? Or get a plate frame that says "Draggin' at the Dragon". I dunno -- I'm bored.

Motorcycle(s): Depends on the week you ask

Posts: A lot.
There is already a drgnee. It's on a Chevrolet Extreme that is black with red racing stripes. It's either the guys or his girlfriend's truck. Either way, taken. Darryl Cannon said I should get one that says "Mnetr" (Maneater). I figured that was a bit butch. Funny though.

That sucks... I would say no on the maneater thing.

Maybe

DRGNGL ("DRAGGIN GIRL" or "DRAGON GIRL")

You only get 6 letters on MC plates in TN? Bummer.

Not sure about this but can a bike have the same lettering since the plate says MC? Not sure but something to check into.
