Check your nuts

Today I was outside looking at Ninja when I just happened to notice that the rear motor mount nuts had fallen off and the bolts were partially out and just hanging there. I don't know what caused them to come loose because I checked them a few weeks ago.

I had been noticing that the chain was grinding a lot when I pushed the bike. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until I saw the motor mounts loose like that.

After reading online, it seems that loose motor mount bolts can cause the frame to crack. So I'm glad I caught it early.

I had to replace the nuts with hardware store nuts. They were 10mm-1.25mm pitch nylon lockwasher nuts. I also put some red locktite on them just to make sure they stay put this time.

From what I've been reading, its fairly common for them to come off so check your nuts to make sure they are tight. They should have 24 ft-lbs of torque.

I've replaced mine with a nylock nut, never a problem anymore.

I think its the same kind I used. I wanted stainless nylock, but they didn't have the right thread. I got chromed steel instead.

I thought I had the bottom rear tightened, but the other day I go out and find that its torqued, but still loose. The threads either don't go all the way down or they are messed up somehow. I fixed it by installing a washer to take up the space between the nut and frame. The only issue now is that the right foot pedal has a high frequency vibration that I didn't notice before.

Nah. I had been noticing a lot of chain noise to the point that I thought my chain was bad. It just vibrated loose. Nobody was messing with it.

Thanks Jono! That would be an awesome name. Mine is weird and not actually recognizable as a name. Handy for publishing articles since it doesn't give away my gender but otherwise it's a PITA.
