engine covers

Does anyone know where to get a set of engine covers? I seem to only be able to find them for the ninja300. I have a 2011 ninja250 I am turning into a track bike.

I’ve not seen them and WERA didn’t require them.

I'm not doing it because of WERA or any requirements. Just want to keep my bike in the best possible condition.

What's wrong with the stock covers?

The engine covers don't replace the stock covers. They're mounted on top of them to protect the stock covers from scratches and eventually avoid an oil leak in case of a fall.

Carbon fiber

a) Is thin and will grind away almost instantly... the point of case covers is to avoid abrasion damage to your engine cases in a slide. That's why the proper metal ones are so thick.
b) Can shatter under the right circumstances, leaving needle-sharp debris in its wake (unlikely for a piece like this, though)

Carbon looks cool and is light, but is not particularly abrasion-resistant.

For me, case covers make sense on a bike where the engine cases are expensive.
But on the ninja, OEM engine cases go for about 130 each brand new and about 70 pre-scratched. So spending almost 100 to protect a piece that's worth 130. I don't know.

Now, if it's to prevent an oil spill on the track, I get it. But does this really happen? How long a slide has to be to grind the aluminum clutch cover all the way through?
I guess if the case covers are not mandatory by track organizers, then it's because it's something that doesn't happen very often. Organizers are usually more concerned about glasses shattering, coolant plugs, oil filters and oil plugs.

And regarding the oil spill, only the clutch cover would be needed, as there is no oil on the stator.

Maybe I'm missing something.

Ah - covers for the covers.

Can you even see them under the fairing?

I'n not following the need. I get it if you crash and slide a while, but it needs to grind through the fairing then the cover to even be an issue.

You could just have a stock replacement with you, but seems like the least of your worries as a new track rider.

^^ No, the fairings don't cover the clutch and stator covers.

If the fall makes a hole on the clutch cover, you have to replace the cover and the oil. And you get to be kind of unpopular because you oiled the track.

But is a carbon cover for the cover going to prevent that?

Carbon cover really does work well to protect case, but only once!

In crash, fairing gets squeezed between ground and side case. It takes maybe 3-5ft of sliding to grind through fairing and remaining 100ft is on engine case itself.

AFM have always required stronger aftermarket cases or case covers on certain models known to have "glass jaw" cases that crack or grind through easily; i.e. all GSX-R, R1, R6 left side, etc. Seems they got tired of maintaining list, identifying these models, and checking at tech, so they are requiring case guards on ALL bikes this season.

Might also be overreaction to numerous aftermarket oil-filter failures last year. There was 5-bike pile-up at Thunderhill last year where one guy broke both wrists, an RSV4 sustained $7k in damage, one helicopter and two ambulance rides, etc.

Since no metal case guards are available and used factory engine cases are cheap and plentiful, I'm just going to use a factory case and double them up. Chop off the top-half and sides. Bevel/grind inside so it spoons over the case easily for two bolt-holes to line up. Then epoxy and/or weld it on.

For the N300, there are the Bonamici, made of aluminum, but they cost $300 the set:

Exactly! The smartest thing a novice can do is play on the safe side and not to crash.
I've seen it many times already. Shiny bike and smiles in the morning meeting. Broken bike and tears in the afternoon.

A couple crashes on the right, one high speed80+ and a few on the left all high speed. The hot bodies covers the left better then the right.
