Yup, the damage can be past just the sprockets and chain - a too tight chain can cause problems with the output shaft of the transmission (typically when the chain is too tight and the rear wheel hits a large/sharp bump in the road, placing tremendous torque on that output shaft). In the worst cases, it can require splitting the engine cases to start fixing parts.

...it can also ruin rear wheel bearings.

True, but those are rounding errors cost-wise compared to transmission problems.

true... but it's still something that needs to be considered when one over tightens their chain. besides, if you have a shop change out the rear bearings, I doubt you would call the charge (parts and labor) for doing that rounding error$.

So, how would you be able to tell if that has happened? I've had to ride my chain extremely tight due to emergency roadside chain adjustment (adjusted at what must have been the loosest spot) and that idiot who basically screwed up my tire change by "helping" and then kicking me out of his garage in only an hour (first time I encountered the "gets tighter after you tighten the axle nut" phenomenon but it was too late to fix it and I hadn't slept in two days).
