So today I plan to open the bike back up and hook a coil of wire around one of the plug wires. Then I need to build a small capacitive coupling circuit, and try and program the chip to read the pulses as RPM while ignoring the additional ringing. (noise filtering in the program)
This will be a "doosey" but looks like I have the day off to do it. Wish me luck. too bad I can't figure out how to get the debugger working with how I program these chips. Would make things easier. I have to program in an LED to act as my debugger otherwise/currently. Slightly annoying. Off hand does anyone know how many plug fires for one side of the engine (one cylinder) we get per revolution? Just one right? I suppose it doesn't matter now as I can figure it out after I'm reading pulses. Just would be nice to know ahead of time for the setup.

Just let me know what you would like me to do
PM me the parts that you need me to buy, or what you need help with. I'm pretty good with soldering if you need some help |

Tomorrow the house gets a fresh coat of paint so I'm packing everything up and taping everything off at the moment. Bike has to be put away along with the gauge for the next 24 hours or so.
I got the antennae circuit wired up for the rpm sensing and just need to program the chip to sense the pulsing. I also need an LCD to debug the pulses since I can't use the program debugger with my compiler. I'm going to be another week or so before I have the LCD and the house painted so I have to take a short break from this project, but I will be back. I'll send you a PM when I come back for details about the shift gauge I offered you. we just need a processor and a couple switches to get you set up and running. the shift/gear display gauges will be a bit longer while I sort out the intense C programming... learning new things as I go. I can actually start some on assembly of your gear display now without the chip to speed things along some. I'll be back when I have the LCD and the house is painted. lol I wish I could move things along faster but I don't have a choice.

Will the bad CDI fluctuating RPM issue affect this?

Wow!..
No.
Not if I'm coming off the plug wire. I'm bypassing the CDI all together! Excellent question! You sir, win the car behind door #3. I may even build an RPM display into the gauge too. If I can figure out what RPM to shift at, surely I can display the RPM on an LCD with ease. Perhaps the LCD can be an add on attachment. (or even replace the 7 seg digit?!) House is painted.. Need a few day break from the housework and the gauge. I have received several more new great ideas on how to wire the circuit and also programming examples. This will get done when I have the time to sit down and do it. Moving all my crap a third time this year into the new house too so that's slowing me down. Also can't forget a fishing break for some exercise. Back in a few days to do more work on this project folks. Promise!

Adding myself to this thread so I can keep up to date on the status As soon as this is available please let the community know. If you're looking for someone to help test the device I'm more then willing to help.
The thing I'm most interested in is what gear I'm in. When shifting a manual transmission in a car I never forget what gear I'm in but on the bike for some reason when I get into the 6th gear I always thing I'm in 5th. |

I'm really interested in this too, been wanting a gear indicator for the last year or so. I'm tired of trying to find 7th gear.
I was following your leaning gauge thread. |

I have been thinking about getting a gear indicator, however a shift light I don't want. Just a simple plug-and-play gear indicator, like the HealTech GIpro DS. http://www.amotostuff.com/product/GPDS-K01.html
I have a FI bike, and I was wondering if these are very easy to make? Because they usually cost about 150USD, which I find expensive. I love the fact that they only require to connect one plug though, and their small size |

If you have the fuel injected bike you can buy any name brand gear indicator.
However I hear they don't work so well as they estimate based on RPM or a number of other things. Sorry I'm lagging guys.. I have still be occupied with the move. I haven't forgotten this project. I keep thinking about it all the time but so busy it's hard to get to it. The move is almost done so I'll have more time sooner than later. got all the heavy stuff left to move like the CRX in the garage and the fridge and washer\dryer. lol Like I said I already have a working gear gauge and program for the ninja 250R carbuerated bike. If you guys really need them let me know. I'm just working on adding the shift part now.(bling bling addition) the rest of it works as far as the gear gauge goes. We can work something out.

Can't buy enough time lately. I want to finish this project more than life!
Been working on it like a year now and would be happy to see it finished so I can get some other projects done. soon enough! Once I finish moving and building the gauge I can get back to business catching the monsters on huge lures.

So hows this coming?
Id be interested in one. The shift light can be tacky at times but a solid gear indicator I dont think anyone would turn down.

I want to put a flexible rectangular EL panel on my helmet. Being rounded, that means that I can wrap one side against it (the top) and the rest sticks out like a hood. I want to fill the area underneath with batteries and electronics. The only way I could think of was to take that expanding foam stuff they sell in spray cans and fill up the space underneath, then take it off the helmet and carve open spaces for the other stuff. I plan to take those USB power writs bands and incorporate those so that I can charge my bluetooth kit and power the EL panel. The entire thing is going to be under one of those SkullSkins stretchy covers (I believe it's the same material as an elastic book cover), so I want it to look pretty "integrated." Anyway, I was wondering how to keep it from sticking to the helmet and damaging it when I spray the foam or if there's a better option entirely. Is masking tape enough? Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen that foam stuff since the late '80s/early '90s when I was a little kid so I'm not sure it still exists (many aerosol products no longer do due to CFC regulations). |

A manual switch some where around the shift lever is possible. Dont know how much of an eyesore that would cause. Maybe with another linkage involved you could get it out of the way? For daylight visability, use non reflective film. Its similar to the surface found on LED Tvs and pc monitors.

I don't know if this will help or interest anyone but I had this shift light in my Mustang and it was incredibly good.
There are installation instructions for some Kawasaki bikes but not for a 250 so maybe someone knows if they will work the same way or not. They are really small, like the size of a tiny flashlight and they're adjustable so you can set what RPM you want it set too. I had a blue one mounted inside the center AC vent and it was bright enough to see clearly during the day and at night it filled up the entire inside of the car with bright blue light. http://www.raptorperformance.com/index.html |
