So some sort of magnet thing like the koso?

Not likely. The koso has a setting to tell it how many magnets you're using and it uses that to determine how to change speed. I don't think you can just hook up the sensor and expect the display to read it without some sort of interface to tell the gauge what to output. You should find out what sensor the zx10 uses for it's speedo and try to work with that.

How sexy would this be?

I'll have to take a look on how it reads he speed. Thank you!

Water temperature- does it come with any sensors? If not, water temp isn't going to work. What does it use to trigger the oil light? isn't telling you.
Don't worry, I don't think your trying to ruin anything, thanks for the questions, you might bring up something I did not think about. keep it up.

I agree, the more magnets the more sensitive the speed will be. I dont think there is a difference between the sensor in the koso and this one. the main difference is that koso is more user friendly, it allows you to change the setting on the fly, this gauge comes set from the manufacturer. if we were able to change the setting I bet you we could add more magnets, it would just be trial and error, a lot of testing the speed/setting, it could probably be done in a couple of hours and be very accurate. I wonder if they set it to the actual processor (as in programed to it) or if its like an internal set screw.

What do you mean hack the koso gauge?

Here is the water temp diagram, as you can see the actual sensor just sets the ground. Power and ground are independent from the gauge. I think it will work.BTW this is form the ninja 250r manual.

I have not bought the gauge yet, I want to find out if we could adjust the speed sensor to fit any bike, that way if for some reason is inaccurate we can adjust it and get it perfect. I plan to pay for it before the week is over, it will take a few weeks to get here form china.
Hope you guys are as exited as I am.

keep the questions coming.

Looks like it should be ok. What I meant about hacking the koso was that if you could take apart a koso speedo and see if it could output the speed signal to the gauge cluster, what would be pretty cool.

lol sorry i still dont get it, do you mean the speed sensor at the wheel? like I said I believe the speed sensor is pretty much the same. if not please clarify.

No, the koso speedo is not just the sensor. It's a gauge unit that takes the speed sensor signal and calculates the speed, then outputs to the gauge.

Just confirm all the lights should work, there is a way to make the L R turn signal work but it gets a little more involved.

Speed should work as it has its own sensor

In the process of confirming fuel gauge, it needs to read empty when it receives 1-9 ohms and full from 91-100

I believe the rpm reads in volts. Have not found the range that determines what rpm it shows. If someone knows anything about this please post.

So I just got word that the fuel gauge reads empty at 0 and full at 500 ohms. Ours reads from 0 to 100, does anyone have any ideas how to fix this with out a new sensor?

You should be able to solder in a 400ohm resistor on the fuel wire to achieve a total of 500ohm resistance.

How would this work?
Stock gauge
0 ohms sensor = empty at gauge
100 ohms sensor = full at gauge

Ebay gauge (0 to 500)
0 ohms sensor + 400ohm resistor 80% at gauge (400/500)
100 ohms sensor + 400ohm resistor 100% at gauge (500/500)

That's the way I see it but I am no expert. Correct me if I am wrong.

Current is what moves through a circuit. I'd guess that the fuel sender provides 5v at Full and drops lower as the tank empties out. Ohm's law states Voltage = Current * Resistance, or V=I*R. If I (current in amps) = 0, then it doesn't matter what R reads because you would still be at 0. If the gauge requires a resistance of 100ohm to read full (and it's rare our gauges read full) then at 5v, the circuit should be seeing roughly .05 amps.

So if you've followed so far, R=V/I. I'm still assuming 5v. So if I drops to 0, Resistance becomes infinite, or rather in this case, the gauge would read empty. It shouldn't matter if we have 100 or 1000000 ohms of resistance. I think I'll try to measure the voltage when the tank is full to get a more accurate calculation, but I hope you get the drift.

I was wrong, 0-10 = full , 90-100 = empty

I think You are right but opposite because of my bad info.

Ok guys so I am guessing that the new gauge will just come with wires and no connector/plugs

I want to order the male end of the plugs. The ones attach to the harness that goes to the stock gauge. That way I could just insert the new wires in the correct order and just connect it to the female end and done. See below, the two plugs at the bottom.

I got that image from bike bandit, to find it just navigate to our bike, then search for meter. It's the only one.
harness part number 23008

The problem is that they sell the entire harness , I have not been able to find the plugs. Are these universal/standard plugs I could just order from somewhere?

Need help finding them.

Oh ok. It should still be ok to install a 400ohm resistor.

Jon, you will want the 9 pin connector as well as the 3 pin connector. Even though the bike only uses 2 wires off the 3 pin, it won't fit otherwise. The wires on the 3 pin connectors link up with the turn signals and something else, which I can't remember right now.

Well, you will need more than $20 worth if you are going to resell the gauges. Just buy enough to cover the $20.

That's assuming everything works, if not I'll be stuck with them. I think I'll just buy the pins, de-pin the stock connectors and use them on the new harness. Can you de-pin them?

Why not just cut off the stock harness from the oem gauge and resolder them to the new gauge? You can remove the pins, but you would still need to connect the new wires to them. They're crimped on, so they're not coming off without getting mangled.

No, I meant take the pins off the connector. Crimp new pins to the new gauge, then installer those pins to the connector.

how the heck did i miss this thread? subscribed.

i'm definitely interested. check out the video of the gauge in action on this ebay listing. looks pretty nice. now if someone can just figure it out how to install it and do a diy, i'm in!

edit: i found another video of the gauge in action. you can see the back of the gauge as well. it has a speedo cable input and one harness with a plug on it. watch it for yourself here.

Little update while we wait for the the gauge, plus its am bored no power here in mass.

I wanted to see if I could de pin the connector. Tool the tight fairing off, located the harness and used a flat jewler's to move the locking leg. Really simple.

So I am going to buy some pins, the plan is to depin the original harness connectors and use them on the new harness.

Getting inpatient, but it's only been a week. Can't wait to get it.

I am also looking into making an android tablet or phone as a gauge. That would be cool right? Imagine the possibilities.

I was looking for chea android tablets, eBay has some for $75. They are pretty bad, 800Mhz, 250 ram, resistive screen. But it dent really matter because you won't be doing a ton with it and not going to spend hours touching it. It's missing something important, GPS. Cheapest tablet with gps are $200 and up.

The arduino board would prob be about $60. So total price would be around $150. (with out gps)

That's nice, so if you get a tablet + gps then that'll be around 250? I think that's awesome!

I think android might be able to use an external gps receiver, I think they go for $30 or so. Still dont know if I am going to try it, it involves me writing the program... I think I can do it but I wonder how long is it going to take me.
