Factory oiled air filter

Is it recommended to add additional oil to pre oiled factory air filter? Trying to stick with oem products, and the seller added a recommendation to add more oil - because it is only "lightly oiled".

EDIT: when I say "seller", I'm referring to an EBay seller - not a shop tech.

Thanks.

Follow cleaning and oiling procedures outlined in Ninja 250R Owner's Manual. Starting pg. 98 I think.

I bought a factory air filter element for my Ninja. It came in a plastic bag and it had plenty of oil on it already. You only want a light coat of oil.

Thanks for the replies!

A couple of apologies: first, I meant to tap the tech section - not farkles. Second - I double checked and the seller says to apply more oil because it has "settled to one side". From just sitting i suppose.

I went ahead and bought it. I envision just giving it a little squeeze to re-distribute the "settled" oil throughout. I'll just monitor it over the next handful of rides to make sure debris are not making it through.

Thanks again!

Yeah, the squeezing part is key. Too much may restrict flow and excess will drip into engine and cause smoking. Similar to overfilling crankcase, ask me how I know! Haaahahahaha !!

It's really easy to over-oil a foam filter (ask me...), even with a spray oil.

I like to use a spray oil instead of the filter-in-a-bag oiling system, but again - it doesn't take much to over-do it.

You just want it to be tacky. If you can see oil sitting in the foam pores you most likely have too much, and it will run overly rich.

I received it today and installed it. It didn't seem like the oil had "settled to one side", as the seller put it. But rather it seemed like the whole thing was lightly oiled. There was one corner with the slightest amount of settled oil - but all i did was give the whole thing a squeeze and rubbed the whole filter down with the small amounts of oil on my gloves. I think it was enough - but as I said I will check it over the next handful of rides to ensure particles are not making it through.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks! Can I keep this thread going with other topics? Lol.

I just went out and bought all factory items for an oil change - Kawasaki filter and synthetic oil, along with all the gaskets/o-rings/washers. I was thinking rather than put in all that expensive stuff right off the bat - should I put in some cheaper oil and filter for a few rides to get the system cleaned out a bit, then put the good Kawasaki stuff in soon aftee? I just got this bike recently and the oil looks really dark in the window. Just wondering if it would be a waste of 60 bucks when I know there's some ugly oil in there right now.

Nah, just put what you got in. Full synthetic oil is best as it has highest levels of detergents and best lubrication. It will clean and lube your engine better than any temporary stuff. Why cause more wear and tear than necessary for those 200-300 miles using lesser oils?

I was thinking not even 200-300 miles, but more like 20 miles! Haha. Literally to just flush as much as that old crap out before putting in the good stuff. I would even use something good like rotella. Does that change your thoughts, or still seems unnecessary?

I appreciate the feedback!

Rotella T6 might actually be better than Kawasaki oil.

Cool - I'll just put in what I have and do the next few changes with T6 at smaller intervals. Thanks!

We ran both our Ninjas on T6, and it worked well.

No need to spend $60 on an oil change. T6 is usually around $20/gal or $5/qt and NAPA sells good quality WIX filters for around $10-$12.

Yea I hear you. My logic was not to spare any expense as the current oil is black as hell! Lol.

Black is actually OK, it's the carbon from combustion. I change oil on my race bike every 50-hrs and it turns black within the first day. Sending oil off for UOA will tell you the real specs on your oil such as TBN and other wear-indicators.
