Damage from brake fluid questions

I just got a spiffy new set of brake lines and I'm going to install them today.

Thanks to the Interwebz I've got lots of reference material and this looks like a simple job.

Two questions:

1) I know that brake fluid eats paint. Question is, how fast? This job will result in spilled fluid, and I'm quite sure that no matter how many paper towels and such I lay down, contact is likely to happen. How fast do I need to be with cleanup?

"OH SH*T OH SH*T SH*TSH*TSH*T"

or

"Ah, bugger. I'll reach for this rag right here...."

2) What should I use to clean the fluid off of painted surfaces? Brake cleaner? Formula 409? Spit?

TIA....

I think I'd wipe it off with a paper towel first, then use 409 or something similar to clean any residue.

I don't think it will damage OEM paint or powder immediately, but it's hard to say. It will soften spray can paint and probably streak any silver metallic paint (like engine case paint) quicker.

It isn't gunna be instant, wipe with a clean shop towel, wash with Dawn dishwashing liquid, water rinse. Should be no problem really.

What the other guys said.

If it's left on the paint for a while, the paint turns sticky and icky and stays that way for a long time (spilled some on a HF vice years ago).

Exactly.

Hope you plan on servicing the calipers, and flushing the fluid too.

I'd use liquid soap to wash after wiping it off. If it's on a painted surface, make sure to apply a little wax on it as the Dawn strips the wax off the surface. I'm sure the brake fluid also dissolved any wax that was there a well.

Success. Velcro tie on the brake lever... we'll see how it is in the morning.

I just wonder why they give you SO MUCH brake fluid.... 'cause that stuff don't keep.

(It's bike-specific, BTW... MOTUL RBF600... so no reason to package it in such a big bottle).

It keeps a while. Several months, at least. If you screw the lid on tight.

What I also like to do is use plastic food wrap (saran wrap???) to cover the hole before screwing on the cap. Keeps it more air tight so water from the air doesn't get in as easily.

30 seconds you probably wont notice it. 5 minutes will leave marks that you'll be able to polish out. an hour and it will be very noticeable and you'll have a real hard time making it go away without repainting.
