Bennche or kawi?
ive read a blog about the Bennche already but i want to know what you guys think... are the Bennches even worth looking into? the only reason i even considered them was because of the price, weight, and styling.

Aloha and welcome, Sean.
Do yourself a favor an buy a ninja. Until they have some sort of track record, I'd stay away from those bikes unless you enjoy working on bikes rather than riding them. |

the looks is all there, but the power-plant is really under powered (at least when looking at the specs). i have tried racing one down the road, but they didn't even try. so i couldn't get any first impressions regarding their acceleration or speed. the sitting position is permanently sportier, because the handlebars are lower. so even if you wanted to sit up a little, its not really possible, while on the ninja, you can the price on the Bennche website is like $3.399... just save up a little longer, and get the ninja 250. you wont regret it.

Aloha and welcome to the addiction we call being a motorcyclist. The 250 is a great first bike, it is mine. 3 pieces of advice, 1) get trained, as in take a MSF class, 2) get good quality safety gear and wear it, and 3) ride YOUR ride, ie don't ride past your personal comfort level. Welcome to the forum, if you have any questions, just ask. Many many many experienced riders on here that can answer almost any question you have. I think the only that has been asked is what is the meaning of life. So save up the greenbacks and look around, you may be able to find a used one for a lot less than a new one.

Hey Sean. I'm in your neck of the woods. If you're looking for a used 250R 2008 or 2009, I've seen quite a few on craigslist in the st. louis area well worth what they are selling them for. Of course, some are overpriced, but I've seen more in the right price range.
As stated above, take the MSF. I took mine with St. Charles City parks and had a good time considering I had NO experience whatsoever. I've since recommended 5 or 6 other people and they have had great experiences there as well. Good luck!!!

Thanks for all the advice guys. It really helps. I have another problem (most of you probably didnt have to deal with this) but my parents think its too risky to get a bike period. I know im not going to be stupid with a bike and I know that you have to have respect for a bike no matter how fast or slow it is. So is there any tips or facts that you guys have that would ease their fears?

take some lessons, and then do the MSF course and pass it with a good understanding of the fundamentals, so that your parents can feel assured that you at least have the basics under your hat/belt. and so that you also have the confidence and knowledge not to drive your brand new bike into a tree like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et0B-7gVTHU but basically you need to be 10 times more aware of your surroundings and of what your doing compared to driving a car. cos a small bump, or swerve in a car might not be a big deal, but on a bike, it could mean serious injuries or even death. ive come off my bikes a lot (and thankfully never seriously injured myself), and just last week end i was reminded how easy it is to get caught on the short end of the stick, when some idiot on a scooter was overtaking a car on a blind corner. i didnt hit her, but i dropped the bike where i stopped, because the curb of the road was washed out and it was about half a foot lower than the asphalt... no injuries, and no damage to the bike (miraculously) but it was a very close call. basically you need the confidence to take the turns (turning stiffly is bad), be able to break fast, etc. but don't get reckless, thinking that you know it all after just 15k miles, because even when your not reckless, its easy to get in trouble. ive been driving a bike in a crazy bike country for the past 10 or 11 years now, and im still learning how to take corners... and i don't think ill ever learn how to do it really properly until i get a chance to learn on a race track. specially since roads are so congested here, and all too often quite broken down.
