You are correct, we need nothing. But that's no fun. So we get something. The problem is that in many cases we get what is imposed instead of what we want. Smart phones are a perfect example.
I still find fault with this, when people don't want a smart phone they don't get one. I ask people what they want to do with their phone, if making calls and texting is all they want then they get a basic phone unless they want a phone with a nicer and smoother interface

True. Assuming one knows what he/she wants. Most people don't. At least most people here don't. So they buy what they see, and they usually see expensive stuff. Not limited to mobile phones, of course.

Things may be different in America.
In fact, they probably are different! You seem to be much more practical and reasonable people. With much less of that "ohh look what (insert item here) my neighbour has I need a new and better one now" stupidity.

wait are you implying that the ATT network is faster?

While that may be true in cities, its not here. I got 3G about 75% of the time here but I only had phone service about 25% of the time. I switched to Verizon. Problem solved. Thats why.

also

I like having truly unlimited data and not being throttled like ATT does...

Oh so ur on sprint? Or metro? Hate to break the news to ya but Verizon throttles data as well. Though, I doubt you even go over 2gb per month.

Lol I can say all the bad **** I want about them, watch this. Verizon has better 3G coverage now then, they will throttle you if you use too much data, google it.

What if I give you 100% free service for as long as I work there?

And charging customers money for contact transfers?

I think everyone knows exactly what they want. It's no one's fault but their own that they don't know what they actually need. Semantics aside, it comes down to the individual. Some find good use in smartphone, some get the latest iphone as an accessory, and some stick to good old $10 cellphones because they don't need a phone to do anything but make calls. In any case, it's their money and I won't be the one to tell them how to use it. That's what ad companies are for.

In a dog-eat-dog world, survival may not always be pretty, but it's survival nonetheless. If the customer walked out happy, then I say good for you for accomplishing your goal while leaving them satisfied and not feeling bullied into buying stuff they DIDN'T want just to make you happy.
