You will never get it perfect, but I found the best way to apply it is to get the wheel off the ground so you can rotate it while you apply the tape. Good luck and take heart you will be the only one that will notice your mistakes.

also, spray the wheel with a solution of water and soap when applying. it allows you to reposition the vinyl to get it perfect before the adhesive begins it adhere.

the kit i bought came with an applicator that sits against the rim, mine came out perfect, i will post a pic up later today. best way t do it; hold the applicator at the bottom of the wheel and get someone to move the bike forward slowly for the left side and backwards slowly for the right. i dont mean to sound arrogant but it is literally perfect.

Get High quality vinyl. Those ebay one usually sucks and will break or stretch easily. If unsure, get a roll of 3m vinyl/reflective vinyl and cut your own (straight) ones. You can go as wide as 7-8mm without needing the pre-curved ones.
Clean wheels with alcohol. Put bike on strands, and have someone slowly rotate the wheel while you are applying with your 2 thumbs, one to hold it steady/press it against the rim and the other one to "align" it properly. That method worked best for me. I didn't try the applicator but I'm sure it would give better results if use properly!
