Hi there..I have a heavily modified 1996 250 that I've been working on for several years and I'm almost done but I'm having a problem getting it running again, which is why I'm here..I'm hoping someone has modified theirs and can help me out with a few bugs! Thanks for any help in advance! Adam

I've identified your problem. Your ninja is no longer a ninja.

LOL

What's the issue?

idling problem

I had the bike up and running and riding but it doesn't seem to want to stay running now. I can't get it to idle for more than like 30 sec. I have adjusted the valves, had the carbs apart 3 times and messed with the idle screw to no end. It will idle with the choke on for a few min but if I turn it off it dies or will only idle a very short time. I have the exhaust pretty much open also. I'm more familiar with the Harley platform and I guess I'm wondering if I'm overlooking something...

Not a ninja!

Ha! I figured I'd see that...I do like them stock but I've built a frame jig and was eager to build a chopper..yeah a hardtail..it actually seemed pretty decent for the 2 miles I've been able to put on it.

Is the radiator hooked up? Not that it would matter for 30 seconds, but that tube looks like it's supposed to go somewhere. I'm not familiar with any issues that you could be having. Any way to post a video or something?

Looks great man, hope you get the issue resolved... I'd definitely say it's carb related. Also check your hoses, make sure there are no vacuum leaks.

Thanks to all!

I'm using #108 mains and stock pilot but I can't get it to idle long enough to even rev it much, the petcock is a stock early Harley and I have a clear fuel line so I can see fuel flowing, I had issues with fuel leaking out of the pilot jet circuit but after polishing the float seats with a Q-tip it seems to have stopped. I have had the mixture screws all over the place I'm at around 2 1/4 turns now. Maybe I just need a larger pilot?

@garth285..its brand new, and the tank is super clean, it was one my buddy had that was never rally run. The odd thing is, I had it running but it would only run for around a mile and die, is there an over-temp shut down? I didn't notice anything on any wiring diagram. The only vac lines are running to the coast enrichner and I plugged off the one to the petckock with a brand new block off plug.

Ok, this might be reaching but it looks to me as though you've tilted the engine and carbs further forward than it is in the ninja frame. If I were you this is what I'd do:
1.) Level the carbs (I think this is your issue)
2.) Adjust float height, etc.
3.) Run a 38 idle jet, 102 main jet (unless you've done extensive head work, a stock untouched head won't flow much more than that), idle mix set at 2.75 and match needles and idles screws for both carbs since the stock setups aren't identical.
- From the factory cylinder 1 is tuned for torque and cylinder 2 for HP with different main and idle needles. Since you're running equal length intake and exhaust you've defeated this tuning so you have to match them. Just buy another needle and idle jet for either cylinder and put it in the other cylinder's carb.

I don't think it's overheating - you're way to rich for that. If you've got reliable spark, it's starving for fuel. So if fuel is being delivered to the carbs, it's not getting into the chamber and the only thing affecting that if you're carbs are clean is carb angle/float height (getting the fuel to be the right distance from the jets to be sucked up and atomized). Since you can't change the angle of the engine, change the angle of the carb with some AL tubing - you could even cut the intake runners to fit inside the AL to make for a solid seal or come up with some other way of sealing them.

Anyway, just a thought.

update

Right on, thanks for all the info, I'm going to order the new idle jets today and I'll check out those other items as well, Spooph. I hadn't considered the tilt at all yet. So I went back and double checked and I'm running a #105 main and a #38 pilot..I guess I'll have to try leveling them first...

To try to see if it is the level of the carbs I would jack the front up to make the carbs level and see if it runs. If so then you know the problem.

Update on ninja chop

Sorry for being away but I work 3rd shift 6 days a week and I have 3 kids to chase after! After messing around a bit it seems that at 2 1/2 turns on the pilot I can get it to idle but the slides are bouncing up and down at idle and all over the place when I try to rev it at all, but when I blocked the crescent opening to the diaphragm chamber I got it to smooth out and operate normally. I also only got it to do it once...I'm thinking I have a vacuum issue somewhere..

Could be a hose is disconnected? On the stock ninja there is a vacuum line going to the petcock from the carbs.

I'm pretty sure I have all the hoses covered, I used a block off on the one that's supposed to feed the petcock..I feel like I've been over all the lines and boots and triple checked the diaphragms...

time to spray some carb cleaner and check for rev changes. Old school it.

I finally got it!

Ok, so my vacuum problem was actually due to an intermittent weak spark at idle caused by the ign module. My friend and I were checking all the vacuum lines and he thought that it seemed the vac signal was off from the engine but we were able to get it to rev decently and we double checked the valves and everything was all good...so messing with it the next day I noticed one exhaust pipe was hotter so I checked the spark and at idle one was weak. So I switched the signal wires and the problem followed so I switched out the ign module and bam! I was riding it! Thanks a ton to everyone for your suggestions!

Sorry, I meant 13K rpm redline on the 250 engine stuffed in a bobber... that would be hilarious to see! Also, that video is private...
