carburetors overfilling
after cleaning my carbs they started to overflow. assuming i muffed up the setting on the floats i pulled them back off and readjusted them again. not much of a change at all maybe a mm. but they are still pushing quite a bit of gas out the overflow.
is there something else that could be causing this ? or am i screwing up the float adjustment. they are set to 17mm btw Edit: i also added one shim if that makes a difference. |

The petcock.
Between the petcock and the float valves, gas should only flow when vacuum is applied and the carb bowls should never run over. Look into rebuilding or replacing the petcock. A new petcock is $60 while a rebuild kit is $30-ish + shipping. In my experiences, the new petcock option was the permanent fix, while repairing the old petcock didn't really work for very long. |

One or both floats are punctured or getting stuck in any awkward position. The valves are not sealing (the neoprene tip gets hard and/or the aluminum seats get deformed). The level of fuel inside one or both bowls is higher than specifications. Sometimes a light tapping (wood or plastic screwdriver handle) on the body of the carbs suffices to relocate internal parts and to stop a casual overflow.

Pull the carbs back off. Remove the float bowl. Attach a clean piece of fuel line to the carbs. Turn the carb up side down. Make sure the float is sitting about 10-14 mm above the bottom of the carb. The floats should be level.
You should not be able to blow through the hose. If you can blow through the hose then one or both needle and seat assembly's are not sealing.

that is a good trick that I would have never thought of. Apparently after cleaning them twice one was still not sealing properly. got it now. off to reinstall them in the bike. Edit: Yep runs like a champ. thanks again everyone. Last futzed with by Xer0-; April 3rd, 2013 at 02:49 PM. |
