Shouldn't the CBR250R be called the VFR250?

according to google:

Quote:
There's a well of information on the Net, and some of it is even good! Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I know the exact words the abbreviations stand for, but I can tell you what they mean (learned it working for a Honda motorcycle dealer on Oahu). But, please don't take my word for it either, go down to your local Honda dealer & check it out. There is a data/VIN plate either on the frame at the side of the bike or on the frame neck/steering head area. It'll say "Model" & have the number. Ok, so here goes:

There are exceptions that I don't know because of model changes since I've been "in the business", but they basically follow the following formula:

First is the Alpha Digits which identify the engine configuration & type, such as CB, GL, VF, VT etc. If the bike's engine is built to race specs, it gets a further designator "R".
CB= Inline-four engine
VF= V-four engine
VT=V-twin engine
GL= Opposed Cylinder Engine

Second is the engine size (self explainatory).

Next digit is the one which identifies the type/body style of bike. Most sportbikes are an "F", most cruiser bikes are a "C"

Last, if the model has a sub-model it'll have further alpha digits after. For example the Magna was a VF750C. They also offered some with a mini-fairing around the headlight & two-toned paint. This one was a VF750CDC. On our beloved CBR's, the last digit also tells us which generation bike it is. The original (Hurricane) was the CBR600F, the next generation is the CBR600F2, followed (of course) by the F3/F4 and F4I (Injected). I have no idea what the "RR" actually denotes...anybody?

Hopefully you will all see the pattern here. Here's some examples of different models by model name & engine type followed by the Model Designator:

Nighthawk 750 (inline 4)= CB750
CBR (inline 4)= We all know these!
599/919 (inline 4)=I haven't looked yet to see what model designator they got.
Interceptor (V-4)=VFR800I (Remember the "old" VFR750F?)
Magna (V-4)=VF750C
Shadow 600 (V-twin)=VT600C
Shadow 750's (V-twin)=VT750C (with additional designators for different 750cc
models)
Shadow 1100 (V-twin)=VT1100C or CDC (many different models have been made
in current years & they all ended with a
different designator number, but they all
started with "VF1100C"
Goldwings (opposed cylinder)=GL1800?

i think the CBR designation means they took the inline 4 1000cc engine and chopped 3 cylinders off of it to leave just a 250 single... though it doesn't make sense to me that it's a cbR... i would think it would just be CB.

In my highly uneducated opinion on this topic, I think that they intended it as a competitor for the N250R (a sport bike) and wanted to make that clear, so they named it after its' supersport/superbike siblings, and then made it fugly in its' resemblance to a VFR and put a single cylinder in it. I think the 90's version of the cbr250RR looked MUCH better imho.

somewhat unrelated question, does the cbr250 use the same tires as the new-gen 250R's?

Same type of tires (IRC Roadwinners on US-bound models at least), but slightly larger rear tire size. (140/70/17 instead of 130/70/17). Identical sizes up front.

In CBR, VFR, etc, the last "R" stands for "faired"

The "rr" means race replica...

Altho for a while I thought VFR was a clever pun on an aviation term. Alas, Honda folks aren't THAT witty.

Not really,
It has much more updated components than our Ninjette does.
It's not such a bad bike at all.

I think both Current 250's are pretty cool actually.

The way I rode my 250R today you would never know it was a 250.

Yes, they ripped the VFR for the CBR 250.
I saw this in person the other day both models right next to eachother on the floor.

This is a good idea.

It keeps you from thinking the CRB250R is a full blown super sport bike and taking it straight to the twisties to die on, unmodified.

Now when will they come out with road legal electric at decent price?
Brushless w/ Lithium please.

Why? it's got two things that the Ninjette needs: A more modern instrument panel and fuel injection.

I think it would be fine if it wasn't fugly.

It's Fuel injected. That can be a major thing improving bike feel and operation.

It also has an automatic cam chain tensioner.

Valve serviceman friendly. lol
Less valves to service too. (less expensive and time to service?)

I don't know what type of cam design it is so not sure about how easy to service.

In person, the bike is rather attractive.
That is one bike I actually like the black version of.
But likely would have bought the red anyways.

TBH, the CR250 looks better than the VFR in person. lol
The VFR just has proper equipment though like better brakes, for one.

Does the CBR weigh less than the Ninjette? I would assume so, by the design and looks of it.

I just wonder if the Ninjette might be more dependable with the two cylinders.
I don't know if this counts as more or less dependable.

I really like the Ninjette engine though now after seeing how it's basically exactly half of a 2005 636 engine.

If Kawi would update the Ninjette yet again, they would be on top for sure.
FI, gauges, Ram air, full size tires and a 20 speed transmission.

I like the CBR250. I considered getting one but after I heard about the prices they were going for out the door I knew I couldn't do it. And then I would need full coverage and gear and what not it was impossible being a college student and buying this bike. So I bought a lovely used 06 Ninja 250. And bought insurance/gear/tags/MSF/etc all for under $3000. No other way to do that! So I am happy with my Ninja.

Huh?

Last time I checked, if you COUNTER steer a bike, it handles twisty roads just fine.

Apparently, if you don't know how to control a bike, they become more difficult to ride.

And yes, it looks more like a VFR, so call it a VFR. Manufacturers change designations often and the original designation ends up not making sense years later.

VFR stands for V Four Road though so it would kinda be false advertising to claim the bike has a V4 engine. Also, I don't think they ever made a V4 less than 400cc.

I thought I covered this, but here it is again:

Manufacturers change designations often and the original designation ends up not making sense years later.

But since Honda does still have a V4 line, it makes sense that they reserve the designation for it.

I think they would have been better to not dilute the CBR name, and simply called it something else all together. Similar to Kawi with the Ninja. It doesn't have the ZX designation, and I believe they recently dropped the R from the name.

Yup, just recreational flying and aerobatics, a hobby just like bike riding, if you will.

I seriously considered going for an ATC career a while back, but that meant taking a large pay cut (at least initially) and possible relocation, so I didn't do it. But it would be one of my dream jobs. In a way, I'm jealous, you're going to have so much fun!!
