[American Motorcyclist Association] - Motorcycle Ohio switches training programs

New curriculum to start in 2017

The Motorcycle Ohio rider training program is changing its course curriculum and taking the program in-house, beginning in January 2017.

State Program Coordinator Chuck Stiteler announced the change to a curriculum based on the Idaho STAR materials and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration model national standards for state motorcycle rider training programs. The new program will be known as Motorcycle Ohio Rider Enhancement, or MORE.

“For 2016, we will continue with our current curricula,” Stiteler wrote in a memo sent to Motorcycle Ohio instructors. “MO is in the process of converting the Idaho STAR classroom and range material over for our use.”

In a March 17 press release, Stiteler said the change will “allow Ohio to develop an integrated program with the assistance of other Ohio departments and Ohio motorcycle riding organizations.”

Motorcycle Ohio will control content, delivery, instructor certification and future development. These materials will also form the basis for upper-level courses. MORE will be the only curriculum approved for motorcycle endorsement in Ohio, the memo states.

The Idaho STAR Motorcycle Safety Program – www.idahostar.org – is an Idaho Division of Professional-Technical Education program and operates through the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls. The State Motorcycle Safety Administrators recognizes the program as meeting NHTSA standards.
