Gas coming out on SSR threaded keyless gas cap.

Hello, some months ago I installed a SSR threaded keyless gas cap on my N300.
From the beginning I saw that the cap wasn't sealed really tight and when I filled up the tank to the very top, I could see a little bit of gas coming out. I kept the cap anyways. I use the bike street and track.

Yesterday, at the track, the day was really hot and the bike had been seating on the sun for a while before my first session.
I got into the track with a full tank (really to the top). At the second lap, when breaking off the long straight, the gas started to spray off the gas tank to the point that there were gas all over the tank, the cluster and I even felt it on my chin.
I don't know if the gas was coming out through the threads of the cap or from the seal between the 'frame' of the cap and the gas tank.

I got off the track, cleaned the bike and myself, took some gas out of the tank and came back to riding. No more problems after that.
so from now on, I won't fill it up that much.

Anyways, my questions are: has anyone has this problem with threaded keyless caps? Should I put some kind of sealer on the cap? Which one?

On the website, SSR sells the cap as suitable for the N250 and N300 as well. Maybe it's a desing for the N250 that doesn't fit the N300 that well?

Thanks for any comments.

There should be an O-ring between centre-hole in tank and outer-ring of cap. I found that O-ring isn't very secure and tends to move around when installing even though there's a groove in outer-ring. I tacked ring in place on the outer-ring with some super-glue so it would be centered when installing. Been OK so far.

Next step if it didn't stay was to use some RTV on top first to make sure it stays centered (let dry first). Then use RTV on bottom when installing.

Also note on SSR site says some configurations may require 2 O-rings stacked on top of each other.

There's also a thin O-ring between center cap and outer ring. But mine wasn't leaking there, probably mostly went out in gap between tank and outer-ring since that was at lower level.

I had a similar situation last month during a track day. Full tank, first session, I break for turn 1 and get a face full of gasoline. Fortunately it was a bit chilly out and I had the shield clamped down and the vents closed. I checked the cap, and the o-ring had rotted. I replaced it with half a roll of teflon tape and siphoned off half the tank. Got some buddies to test-tip the bike, and rode it the rest of the weekend without problems. My Ninja's race-only, so I figure adding this to the list of things to check with every oil change, and sticking to half full tank at the most, I'm pretty safe. It'd really suck for a street bike.

So, um, it happened again. I filled maybe *halfway* and it blew fuel in my face at turn 1. Once again, siphoning out until I was down to 3-4 bars on the gauge or no more than half inch above the shelf you can see got me through the rest of the weekend.

I definitely need to change to a different cap. Really don't want to have it leaking gasoline if I crash.

Definitely not safe. I'll give it a try to the gasket, and if it doesn't work, I'll get another cap.

Even if you tip over the bike, some gas can come out and give trouble.

I (finally) made some time and took it apart.

I only found one gasket, and it was damaged.
I'll try to get a new one from SSR.

Thanks! Yes, I'll put some grease on it.

I contacted SSR. They sell spares. They will send me the base gasket for $5. I'll try again once the new gasket is here.

I love how products that are meant to be sealed fail when it comes to the o rings. I find that Loctite gel is the best when needing to repair a seal, if you can't get a replacement for it. This stuff allows for the joint to stay malleable, flex and stays together after being compressed.

Wow! That's bad. Mine wasn't like that.

Mine felt more like plastic than rubber and it just snapped, didn't melt.

I'll cover the new one on grease and keep a close look to see how it goes through time.

Do you know how old your cap is? Maybe SSR changed the material now?
I don't know how old mine is because I bought it used from the the forum.

Thanks for the pics.

I think this gasket is poor design. They're trying to put thin flat gasket onto curved surface (tank lip). It barely has any compression, so it can slide out easily. Solution is thicker gasket with groove in it to match curved lip on tank.
