Bike died, won't start

My '07 250 died on me while riding last week. Electrics just turned off. All fuses are good and a new battery didn't help. Occasionally the electrics will work and the bike will start and run poorly on one cylinder with the tach jumping all over the place.

I'm thinking bad ground. What do you think?

Anyone know the ground locations on these bikes?

Just follow the negative wire from the battery to the frame.

Are you certain the "new" battery is good and fully charged?

That's typically what they do when they have a dead battery, but poor connections are also a good possibility.

The EX250 ground point is not on the frame.

On my '05 EX250 the main ground is a dedicated engine case bolt on the right-hand side of the bike, look just above the clutch cover, slightly above and behind the clutch actuator arm.

You'll find the small bolt that serves no other purpose than to provide an attachment point for a thick black (color coded) ground cable. For verification that you've found the correct item you can back-track the black ground cable to confirm it goes to the battery negative pole (cathode).

The big battery-ground to engine is primarily for starter.

All other circuits have their own ground-wires connected to main black/yellow trunk that goes to battery ground terminal. Since everything is not working, I suspect one of main trunks that everything connects to. Inspect ground-terminal clamp at battery. Then measure resistance to battery negative terminal from opposite ends of ALL other ground wires (bulb-sockets, igniter, etc.). Make table in Excel and record your readings, a pattern may appear that helps.

Or it could also be power-distribution. Pretty much ALL circuits get power through ignition-switch. So measure resistance between power-input terminal of ignition-switch to power-output terminals. Also measure resistance from ignition-switch power-outputs to opposite ends of each circuit.

For example, between ig-switch output to positive-terminal of tail-light socket (with key on). This measures resistance of power-cable to ignition-switch, to output terminals, to wire between ig-switch to fuse-box, then through fuse, then through wire between fuse-box to tail-light socket.

Could be power-wire between ig-switch and igniter.
