took stator cover off, cranks slow wont start
had a leak from the stator cover and took it off to reseal it.
put the cover back on and the motor cranks slow and wont start. battery is good, cranks another pregen over just fine. had cover off and the starter spins just fine. the motor does crank, it is just slow

im thinking removing the paper gasket and smearing rtv on instead may make the gear going to the starter jam...maybe

answered my own question... loosened all the bolts, stuck a utility knife blade between engine and the stator cover and ...it starts. woot.

Are you sure that the cover is properly aligned with the crankcase?
It seems that you are introducing some abnormal resistance to the starter shaft.
