Pre gen-new gen engine differences

Gday all, I am about to replace the cam chain and guides on my '92 Ninja.
I have new pistons and rings to go in as well, but with 98,000 kms. On the clock, I would rather get a newer cylinder to fredhen up to take the new pistons and rings.
My question is, are the 2008-2012 engine cylinders interchangeable with the earlier engines? Just trying to find out my options before removing the head and cylinder.
Cheers,
Rob.

No. The 92 engine has the chain tensioner in the block . The new engine is a totally different desine. Rods are the same but most of the engine and all of the valve train is different.
