AMA Pro Barber American Superbike Friday provisional qualifying results

Blake Young made an impressive comeback from his injury-induced layoff to grab provisional pole position Friday at Barber Motorsports Park's AMA Pro eventLEEDS, ALABAMA, SEPT 24 – While everyone was focusing on the championship battle between Josh Hayes and Tommy Hayden, Blake Young snuck in and stole the provisional pole on a 90-degree day at Barber Motorsports Park.

Hayes and Hayden are the focus this weekend, and rightfully so. One will win his first ever Superbike championship and, if it’s Hayes, it will be Yamaha’s first since 1991 when Thomas Stevens gave the tuning fork factory their only title. If it’s Hayden, it will be Suzuki’s eighth in a row and 11th in 12 years, a streak only broken up in 2002 when Nicky Hayden rode a Honda to the title and into a MotoGP ride.

Hayes has a 22-point lead on Hayden, which means the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider will need to have a career weekend, as well as some luck. And he may or may not get it from his teammate. Asked how he felt about possibly being in the middle of the championship hunt, Young said he’d like for Hayden to win and to keep the title with Suzuki, “but, at the end of the day we want to win too and that’s what we came to do. I’d like finishing up this season with a couple wins. It’d be great. And it’d motivate me really, really hard to go into the off-season to try to come back for the 2011 season and fight for it.�

Later he repeated himself, but added that he would help Hayden if that was how the race unfolded.
