Handicap Motorcycle Plates!

So were driving down the road today, and see a HD with Handicap plate

What a freaking joke, an insult to the handicap people IMO. Hell, what a stupid state just for issuing it. This is right up there with the people scamming the VA.

IIRC, there are one or two members here that have handicap plates on their bikes.

Phil's dad tried to get it. He has a disability (Chrones) but it doesn't stop him from riding just walking a lot...

They said no though... Perhaps MD is smarter

I think it's kinda funny too when I see people get out of Porsches or Z3s or Miatas and have handicap plates. No wonder they are handicap, they hurt me to get in and out of and I'm still a kid.

Back in 1970, I used to get some real looks when I pulled into a handicap space with my A C Cobra. I would pivot the seat out, reach back behind the seat and pull out my aluminum wheelchair, transfer, and be on my way. The car was modified with a hand operated electric clutch. I spent five months in a wheelchair and an equal amount of time on crutches. I have since graduated to a cane. I have a folding one that fits nicely in the tank bag. Luckily I don`t need to use it all the time. Since I took up bicycling, it gets used less and less.

Geeze Alex props man. I drove around a Cobra for a bit and it was damn near impossible to get in and out of that thing, even if it didn't have the side pipes. They are worse than Elise's.

There is an article in this month's TWO magazine (UK bike mag) with a big section about disabled riders. It is a great read. One guy lost use of his right arm in an accident on a bike. Anyways, his new bike has a left hand throttle that you roll forward to give it gas. That way, when you let off the gas you can clutch at the same time. I think it wouldn't take much to get used to.

That youtube video, the guy has an air-shifter installed. Basically its a thumb up and down button on the left handle bar that hooks up to an air controller shifter.

There is also a website out there dedicated to riders who are amputees, they still ride with prosthetics (there was even one guy who was racing with a left arm prosthetic)

http://www.mtb-amputee.com/motorcycleamputee.htm

I can't blame them, I'd probably still try to ride.

C.B. The driver`s seat was modified. It had the mechanism of a 1957 Plymouth Savoy -- swivel seat. Worked quite nicely although things were a bit tight. The super compact wheelchair just fitted behind the seat. It did ocassionally get hung up in the top mechanism--which was manual. This car did not have roll up windows-- just very drafty side curtains. I didn`t keep the car very long. Traded it in for a 70 Cuda T/A with a 340.

I'm so jealous of everyone who had a car in the 60's and early 70's. We have Honda Civics... freakin great...

C.B. In retrospect, the cars of the 60`s and 70`s were really nothing to write home about. They were big, had huge engines, made a lot of noise, and were a maintenance nightmare. We have cars today that will outperform those lead sleds all the time. The Cuda made a lor of noise, looked fierce, burned a lot of gas, and had a suspension in the stone age. I would prefer a Civic CRX any day. By the same token, I`ll take my Ninjette over a 70`s Triumph Bonneville any time. Technology usually wins out over nostalgia.

Saw my first handicapped motorcycle plate today, at South Mounatin State Park
They were nice people, he was very polite, but she didn't speak.
They have the plate because of her, but I didn't get rude and ask why...
It was on the back of this :

I worked with a guy that was a lifelong dedicated rider. He had an electric shifter, one of the first "Klik" shifters that hit the market. He was an Amputee from above the knee.

To the OP, it is possible that the bike in question was not being ridden by its actual owner. My ex would leave her placard in my truck when I would visit my daughter. Not so I could use it with just my daughter, but when her mom would have to go with us.

Man, I had a hell of a time getting my wheelchair out of a Lincoln Continental, and there was enough space I could slide to the passenger side, pull the chair over the back of the front seat, then slide it out the driver's door...to do that with an A.C....no thanks. At the end of 3 months I was ready to climb the walls, don't think I could have gone 5...

I've met several motorcyclists who are capable of riding a motorcycle just fine, but have difficulty walking any distance. They can sit on the bike and ride, but when they get off the bike and try to walk, they have to deal with a bad foot or knee, a prosthetic, or maybe just get winded really easy due to a lung or heart condition.

^ That would be me - waiting on double knee replacements - will likely be another 16 years - in the meantime I get injections in my knees every 6 months to help prolong the life in them, and i have handicapped tags on my bike and my car
