over 21 getting licensed in CA

Ok, I've been licensed for 16 years since I was 18, but my wife is starting the MSF course next week. Being over 21, does she need to even get a permit, or can she just take the approved MSF course, and take the written test at the DMV and be licensed? I've read the CA DMV website, and it's not conclusive IMO in this regard. Under 21, I can definately see the need for a permit, but over 21, it's not clear as to it's neccesity for obtaining a M1 license.

Experiences with this anyone?

By passing the written test allows you to have permit.

No she does not need a permit prior to taking the MSF course. Assuming that she has not taken the written exam, when she completes the MSF course next week and passes, she is exempt from the "behind the wheel" part of the DMV test (from word of mouth heard that this part was the hard).

Since she has to take the written part anyways, I'd just go ahead and get a permit prior to the MSF course if she has the time. So that way, after she passes the MSF she can just drop off her motorcycle endorsement and be licensed right away. Thats what I did.

i think it's different in each state.
i don't know about CA, but in CT You can take the MSF, pass the course, then take the written test at the dmv for the endorsment. In NJ, it's different. You have to have a permit (written test at dmv) before you can sign up for the MSF.

Tin, in CA you do NOT need a permit to take the MSF course.

Here's how I did it (cause I got licensed in CA before moving to MD)

Signed up for MSF
Took MSF
Passed MSF

Took my papers down to DMV, took my written (both becuase my Class C was about to expire anyway), and got my new spiffy M Class License...

Both? What do you mean both, Sunny?

Do they require you to retake written exams over there? If that is the case, WOW. Over here in Texas, you take it once and that is that. I think some restructuring of the DMV practices are in order. To keep people aware.

Maybe even a motorcycle awareness course.

Well that's what I was hoping to hear anyway...well, she's going to have to make two trips to the DMV regardless, so even if incorrect, it'll all be ok. SHe won't be riding on the freeway at first, at night, or with a passenger anyway, so no biggie really.

why not just call the DMV and ask them, just to make sure? Things could have changed.... you never know.

In CA all she has to have is a Class C driver's license to take the MSF, but she might as well get the permit by taking the written test and get that out of the way then take in the DL389 when she passes MSF to get her M1. That's what we did. We just got licensed at the end of March.

When your license expires and you renew it if you haven't had a test in a while they have you take the test again. The written... Or that was my impression. I got my license in 1998 and got my MC license in 06 so that is a good amount of time. I think my license was going to expire that year... So it makes sense to just take them while I as there getting the M class license stuff done.

What happens in CA is if you haven't taken the written test for any license which you currently hold (Class C, Commercial, etc) within the past year, when you go to apply for your M1 license you will also be required to take a written test on the other class licenses you hold. If you have a Class C AND a Commercial license, you'll have to take both in addition to the M1 test. Stupid, but that's what's required.

I got my license in CT and went through the same proccess as you.
I am currently residing in NJ and about 3 weeks ago I spoke to the MSF instructor and he said you gotta have ur permit before you can sign up for the MSF course in NJ.

What I was told and did when I took the class. The classroom part is what gets you the permit. You study the book and take a test afterwards. Upon passing that you may continue to the road part of the course. Upon completing all the aspects of that part you may go forward with the test. Once you pass that, you may go down to the DMV and take the written test to get you license. Because you already did the road test part you only need to pass the written to get your license. And you can try up to three times in one day.
