Cali model in Louisiana?!?!
So i just started breaking down my 2011 lime/ebony SE for an upcoming gear indicator install. And somehow, i ended up with a california model bike way down here in south Louisiana! I bought the bike brand new from a local dealer about a month ago. Not really that big of a deal just wondering if all this additional emissions control junk is limiting the power of the bike at all? And if so, how would i go about eliminating this system completely?
Thanks -Josh Links to the gear indicator/shift light threads: (pretty neat stuff) http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71404 http://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=82970 |

Interesting. What makes you think it's a Cali model, and could this potentially mean that Kawi has just gone to a 50-state bike and made all of them the same at this point?

it could be that its a 50-state model now. not sure about variations between different model years but at least for 2010 (can't find anything on the 2011s) only the california models have the fuel evap system:
as you can see in on this site, it states that all of these parts are CA only. http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/model...semblies/25942 |

I would take the bike back to the delearship and make them either take the CA equipment off or give you onother bike unless as Alex said Kawi has gone to a 50 state bike instead of having a seperate CA model.

That would be ideal. But the only problem is, I had to hunt for nearly 3 months just to find a new 250r in the state. And 90% of the dealerships (including the one i bought mine from) aren't getting any new ones until they manage to get ahold of the 2012s which the salesman said wouldn't be until late october or early november. I may call them up and ask though. Thanks for the idea!

The emissions stuff doesn't hurt any performance and won't net you any positive gain on MPG either. It's mostly used to recirculate a portion of exhaust back into the combustion cylinder for a 2nd pass before exiting the muffler. Maybe if the bike made more power, it would be an issue, but with under 30hp, I wouldn't be concerned.

I have my bike's carbs jetted and shimmed with a BRT TIS and it hauls butt... w/ all the ca emissions in place. I think people remove the stuff because it cleans up the bike and makes the carbs and valves easier to work on later, not for any performance gains. I still have my stock air box as well. haha.

That'll definitely be the next thing I'll do is a new exhaust, shim, and rejet.

I removed them from all my bikes just for weight loss (and does clean up the internals). You also have three tubes sticking out the left side of your tank?
I'd be surprised if they went to a 50-state bike. Figured we'd know that by now if it occurred. |

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Surely someone would have let the world know by now. But yeah, I do have 3 tubes coming out of the side of the tank.

For what it's worth, Kawi has just put up 4 different links for parts diagrams for the 2012 model: (here's the page on kawi's site)
The links aren't live yet, but it sure looks like there is still a 49-state spec bike, and a California-spec bike.

Where would you find excess fuel vapors except for the exhaust?
EDIT: Sorry, for the ninjette, the Kleen air system draws air in to lean out the exhaust. It doesn't recirculate any exhaust gasses like a smog system does on a car.

Yeah, through more research I've determined that the purpose of the fuel evap system is to filter the fuel vapors that escape from the tank when the bike is parked. Basically the only purpose of it is to reduce the gas smell. Thanks for all the input guys!
