Almost creamed by a cab this morning

On my way to work this morning, I almost got hit by a cab pulling put from a parking spot (a few hundred yards from my house), and then almost got hit again by another cab pulling a u-turn right in front of me (a few hundred yards from my destination). That statistic about most accidents happen X miles from your house or some such definitely applied.

The one pulling the u-turn was the most scary, I was in the left lane of a four lane divided city street (Drumm st in front of the Hyatt, for those in SF), and the cab pulls a hard left from the right lane inside the intersection ahead, I think I have about 20 yards. I hit the brakes hard and lay on the horn but the road surface was still damp from the rains over the weekend and very uneven. The front end felt really squirrelly so I let off the brakes as I approach and move to the very left of my lane. I ended up shooting the gap between him and the upcoming divider and stopped on the other side of the intersection with his bumper about 2 feet to the right of my back wheel. I really wanted to block him there and take a picture so he would get his ticket, but then I'd be obstructing traffic as well. So I left after giving him a death glare.

I think I need an air horn.

Rockets take too long to launch

Just watched the new Tron movie over the weekend, if I could do the whole blue light wall thing behind my bike this guy would have been toast.

Forget the stock horn, and air horn (but don't forget the rocket launcher).

Seriously though, don't even waste a microsecond of time or an iota of energy trying the horn, until you're already sure you're going to avoid the threat. All concentration needs to be on proper braking, swerving, or other action to do everything possible to avoid the impact.

Haha. Failing that, hop off and throw your identity disc at that sucka

Cabbies are particularly bad and aggressive, especially in the city. When I see one, I always assume they will do the worse. I do not miss being a bicyclist in the city.

Now you got me thinking about my left hand. I believe I had the clutch in while I braked and downshifted, but I don't remember. With the clutch in, I had a free thumb to hit the horn. I usually use the horn as a tool of frustration than to get anyone's attention.

I think this is what I hate the most. In every close call I've had so far, I've been completely engulfed in making sure that I avoid the situation that by the time I even have time to honk my horn, the asshat is long gone and most likely completely oblivious to what just happened.
