Use the choke - that's what it's for.

Whatup,
I'm also in NJ so I can relate to our weather. This past week, mornings have been the crispest this season. I usually start the bike with no choke as I stand beside it and put my gear on. I never start it with choke (it seems wrong if I don't have to to just let the engine jump immediately), but bump it up halfway after its settled initially. This all usually takes 2-3 minutes. Then I'm on the road and away. |

As has been said on here multiple, multiple times - these bikes are coldblooded and need the choke to start, sometimes even if it's 80 degrees outside, especially for the first start of the day or if it's been sitting and the engine is cold. I don't understand what the ego trip is not to use the choke. It's only on for a few minutes 'till the engine warms up and that is the way it's supposed to work. It's an enricher circuit, not a butterfly air restricting valve like on a car. It's meant to be used to start the bike. Read your owner's manual, learn how your bike works, get over the fact that it is supposed to be used. Set it up 1/3 - 1/2 way, hit the start button. If it doesn't start in 2-4 revolutions of the engine, turn it up a little more untll it does. That's normal operation - what's the big deal, the turnoff, to using the choke as it's supposed to be used? You can shim all you want, rejet all you want, use the friggin choke to start the bike. |

Air mixture screws?
Are the EPA caps still installed over the air screws?
If they are: Remove carbs, pop off the caps, turn screws in until "gently seated", turn them out 2.5 turns. Real good idea to check the float height while the carbs are out. Replace carbs. You'll still need the choke on cold mornings but she'll start easier and warm up quicker. j98 |
